AAPG committees are smaller governing bodies that advise AAPG and guide various programs, plus conduct and disseminate research and information. They are comprised of subject matter experts.
The primary goal of the AAPG Astrogeology Committee is to emphasize the use of geosciences in the development of off-world exploration energy. The Astrogeology Committee provides AAPG members with a forum to discuss astrogeology and its relationships to terrestrial geology, energy, and other issues.
The committee organizes symposia at various meetings, recommends speakers for distinguished lectures, encourages poster sessions on astrogeology at earth science meetings, and acts as a liaison to groups with similar interests, such as NASA, ESA, and other international space entities.
The purpose of the Corporation Advisory Board (CAB) is to offer strategic and tactical advice to AAPG leadership. The CAB also provides guidance and support for key functions of the Association, including student membership sponsorships, membership recruitment and retention, event speaker recruiting, and communicating company workforce needs to the Association.
The Distinguished Lecture Committee manages the distinguished lecture program. The program features a series of webinars led by expert speakers on timely geoscience topics. It is the distinguished lecture committee’s responsibility to select these topics and speakers. Additionally, it works with speakers to expand their presentations into other education opportunities for AAPG members and event attendees. Browse upcoming distinguished lectures here.

The functions of the Research Committee include:
The mission of the Student Chapter Committee (SCC) is to support the efforts of AAPG Student Chapters on college campuses. The SCC acts as the primary liaison between AAPG and its students and faculty. Within AAPG, the SCC establishes programs that promote student membership, facilitate student involvement in the greater organization, and give students research and career opportunities in petroleum, energy minerals, and environmental sciences. The SCC strives to maintain an active and diverse membership that represents a broad disciplinary and geographic distribution of professionals, thereby providing a valuable resource to students as they transition from academics to professional careers. The Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Committee supports the IBA program, an annual subsurface basin evaluation program for geoscience graduate students.
The program is a hands-on opportunity for students to experience the creative process and the high-tech science that is the foundation of the energy industry today. During the program, university teams analyze a dataset (geology, geophysics, land, production infrastructure, and other relevant materials) for eight weeks prior to their respective Region and dataset competition. The committee consists of AAPG Members worldwide. Learn more about the IBA here.
