AAPG DEG

Division of Environmental Geosciences

Advancing the sustainable use of energy resources.

The Division of Environmental Geosciences aims to promote environmental stewardship and educate AAPG’s membership, the public, and relevant government agencies and officials about ways to use knowledge of the subsurface and petroleum geology to protect the environment, and to find new ways to develop energy resources using new techniques and technologies, ranging from converting waste to an asset (brine mining) to repurposing idle wells into energy resources (geothermal, helium, and more).

What we do

DEG members achieve our mission by:

  • Supporting and encouraging relevant research, then making this research available to agencies, companies, and policymakers
  • Applying research results to solve environmental problems in the energy industry
  • Providing professional development opportunities for AAPG membership, including, webinars, white papers, and special sessions at AAPG major events.

DEG also offers members the opportunity to focus more specifically on one area of environmental geoscience by joining a technical committee. Committees include:

  • Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Committee
  • Environmental Geophysics Committee
  • Water Resources
  • Fugitive Gases and Emissions
