Datapages has served AAPG members, publishing partners, and the wider geoscience community for nearly three decades. It has preserved and expanded access to important geoscience research, supported society publishers and provided a trusted archive for industry, academic, government, and individual users, all while being a source of revenue for AAPG.
To position Datapages for its next chapter, the Datapages Board of Directors, the AAPG Executive Committee and the GeoScienceWorld Board of Directors have approved the merger of Datapages into GeoScienceWorld.
This decision was made to preserve AAPG member access, modernize the Datapages platform, expand the reach of trusted geoscience content, protect AAPG’s publishing assets and create long-term value for AAPG and its members.
AAPG members will continue to have access to the AAPG Bulletin and Search and Discovery content at no additional cost. Over time, members should benefit from access through a more modern platform with enhanced search capabilities.
Why This Decision Was Made
Professional societies must continually evaluate how best to preserve their assets, serve members and adapt to changing technology. For AAPG, that includes ensuring Datapages has the platform, scale and support needed for the future.

Datapages is a 100-percent AAPG-owned, for-profit C corporation that was purchased by AAPG in September 1999. It provides pay-per-view and subscription access to a digital archive of geologic publications from more than 60 geological societies around the world.
AAPG has helped build this archive by supporting the digitization of regional geological society publications and providing royalty payments from subscription sales. Many oil and gas companies subscribe to Datapages, along with academic institutions, government organizations and individual AAPG members.
Datapages hosts AAPG’s free Search and Discovery content as well as the AAPG Bulletin. Datapages does not own the copyrights to this content. AAPG, other publishers and authors retain ownership of their content, while Datapages serves as a portal and access platform.
Datapages generates approximately $1.2 million in annual revenue and modest net income. That net income can flow through to AAPG only if the Datapages Board approves a dividend. Since its inception in 1996, Datapages has returned more than $10 million to its society publishing partners.
In recent years, Datapages has built reserves to support needed platform improvements and database upgrades. Additionally, the Board has undertaken strategic reviews to best position Datapages for long-term sustainability.
Taken together, these considerations led AAPG to pursue a path that would preserve Datapages’ value while giving it the platform, scale and technical support needed for its next chapter. The platform requires significant upgrades to meet current expectations for search, discovery, interoperability and AI-enabled access.
By merging Datapages into GeoScienceWorld, AAPG can preserve member access and content ownership while placing Datapages within a larger publishing infrastructure that already serves geoscience societies, has broader market reach and can support modernization more efficiently than a standalone AAPG effort.
Why GeoScienceWorld
GeoScienceWorld serves a similar function to Datapages and brings complementary strengths. GSW has historically focused on academic and government markets, while Datapages has strong reach in the corporate marketplace.
GeoScienceWorld is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004 by AAPG, the American Geosciences Institute, the Geological Society of London, the Society for Sedimentary Geology, the Geological Society of America, the Mineralogical Society of America and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Its founding mission was to support independent geological societies through publishing technologies and services, achieve economies of scale and make geoscience research more accessible and impactful worldwide.
GSW works with 39 geoscience society publishers and provides access to trusted geoscience content through a modern publishing and discovery platform. GSW also provides access to the AAPG Bulletin and more than 200 AAPG ebooks and pays royalties to AAPG when subscribers access those publications.
Today, GSW serves more than 900 academic and government institutions and companies around the world. Its scale, publishing infrastructure and established market reach have created meaningful returns for participating societies. GSW generates over $10 million in revenue and returned over $75 million in royalties to its publishing partners, including over $4 million to AAPG.
GSW has also built a modern data environment, conditioned content, and deployed a user-friendly platform that is well positioned for future search, discovery, and AI-enabled tools.
Bringing Datapages into GSW creates an opportunity to build on Datapages’ legacy while giving it access to a broader platform, larger customer base, and deeper technical infrastructure.
The Strategic Rationale
The strategic rationale for the merger is straightforward: Datapages and GSW together can offer a more comprehensive geoscience publishing resource, supported by a modern, mission-driven organization with scale, technical capability and a long history with AAPG.
GSW brings strength in academic and government markets, publishing infrastructure, platform modernization and society partnerships. Datapages brings a respected archive of applied geoscience content and meaningful reach into the corporate marketplace.
During due diligence by the Datapages Board, only limited customer overlap was identified, primarily in the academic marketplace. That creates an opportunity to expand access across complementary customer bases and better serve users seeking trusted geoscience research across a broader range of publications.
The combined content library will also strengthen the long-term value of both platforms by improving discoverability, supporting broader access and creating a stronger foundation for responsible technology development. The combined structure is also expected to create operational efficiencies and support opportunities for sustainable subscription growth.
Responsible AI and GeoSapienAI
The merger also enables AAPG’s ability to participate responsibly in AI-enabled geoscience discovery.
AAPG’s technical content is one of the organization’s most valuable assets. Protecting ownership, preserving control and ensuring appropriate use of that content have been central priorities throughout this process.
AAPG and other societies have previously been approached by major oil companies seeking access to technical content for use in proprietary AI models. Those discussions reinforced the importance of protecting copyrighted material while also recognizing that members, customers, and the broader geoscience market will increasingly expect more advanced search and discovery tools. Additionally, AAPG received feedback from a Search and Discovery working group that pointed to moving the content into an AI platform.
GeoScienceWorld has been developing GeoSapienAI, a purpose-built discovery tool designed around trusted geoscience content. Because the Datapages and GSW content collections are largely peer-reviewed, technical, curated and sourced from trusted geoscience publishers, they provide a strong foundation for more reliable retrieval from authoritative source material.
By joining with GSW and its society partners, AAPG can help shape an AI-enabled approach that protects copyrighted material and intellectual property, supports trusted research and gives members and customers access to more effective discovery tools over time.
Had AAPG pursued a standalone AI solution, it would have required significant investment, longer development time and greater dependence on external vendors. It may also have resulted in a narrower product, limited primarily to AAPG or Datapages content.
Together with GSW and its partners, AAPG can pursue economies of scale, protect trusted geoscience content, and support a more responsible approach to AI-enabled discovery for the benefit of members and the broader geoscience community.
Future Financial Benefits for AAPG
Furthermore, the merger is expected to strengthen AAPG’s financial position through recurring revenue and improved financial flexibility. A portion of Datapages’ cash reserves will support the modernization of the Datapages platform and data environment. AAPG is expected to receive recurring revenue from the Datapages business within GSW, supporting member benefits, operations, and long-term organizational stability.
AAPG has also negotiated an opportunity to participate as a founding supporter of GeoSapienAI. This participation is expected to create additional revenue opportunities for AAPG over time, further supporting member benefits and operations.
Remaining financial reserves, subject to Datapages Board approval, are expected to strengthen AAPG’s cash position and improve financial flexibility. This should also help reduce reliance on AAPG’s line of credit and investment reserves.
These financial benefits are intended to support AAPG’s ability to invest in member value, operations and the long-term health of the association.
Governance and AAPG’s Future Voice
AAPG has been involved in GSW governance since GSW’s founding and will continue to have a meaningful voice in its future direction.
AAPG members and leaders have served in senior GSW governance roles over the past 20 years, including Board chair, treasurer, chair of the GSW Investment Committee, and chair of the GSW Governance Committee.
GSW’s Board is built using a competency model, with members selected for the skills and experience needed to guide the organization effectively. As part of the transition, GSW expects to add industry and AI-related expertise to support the next stage of growth.
With the merger of Datapages and the increased focus on the corporate market, the GSW Board and GSW Governance Committee will seek to recruit representatives with relevant industry experience. AAPG will play an important role in helping identify appropriate expertise.
An AI Advisory Council will also be established to inform product and go-to-market strategy for GeoSapienAI. GSW and AAPG will work together to identify AI Advisory Council members, with positions selected based on relevant competency and expertise.
Care has been taken to ensure AAPG has a meaningful forward voice in GSW’s future strategy, particularly in supporting the future growth and success of Datapages within GSW. This approach also honors GSW’s founding principles: providing participating societies with strategic oversight, supporting sustainable growth and ensuring that societies are treated equitably.
What This Means for AAPG Members
AAPG member access to AAPG content will be preserved.
Members will continue to have access to the AAPG Bulletin and Search and Discovery content at no additional cost. Over time, members should be able to access this content through a more modern platform with enhanced functionality.
Individual Datapages subscriptions, including one-year and three-year subscriptions that provide access to AAPG and non-AAPG published content, will continue to be offered. Members and subscribers who have used Datapages to access non-AAPG content will continue to have subscription options for that content.
AAPG member access to GeoSapienAI is expected to include a finite number of searches each month, with the added benefit of being able to search across a broader library of trusted geoscience content, not only AAPG content.
Because AI-enabled search carries operating costs, expanded AI-enabled access will require separate subscription options. Subscriptions to GeoSapienAI are expected to be offered to AAPG members at a discounted rate. Additional subscription opportunities are also expected for institutions and entities seeking an API solution for their own environments.
Publishing Partners
AAPG and Datapages have sought to protect publishing partners throughout this process.
Publishing partners will receive direct communication about the transition and any future opportunities that may become available through GSW, including potential participation in GeoSapienAI where appropriate.
GSW’s academic-market reach may also create opportunities for broader visibility and access to new audiences over time.
