Chasing the Next Giant: Play-Opening Opportunities along the Southern African Margin, with Insights from South America

Following recent historic offshore discoveries and expanding exploration fronts, this three-day event explores the shared geologic story and deep-water play analogues between the conjugate margins of Africa and South America. By comparing active petroleum systems across the South Atlantic, the workshop provides critical technical context for unlocking the next wave of giant field discoveries both offshore and onshore.

Program

Workshop Themes:

  • Conjugate Margin Analogues: Comparative analysis of play elements, structural frameworks, and deposit models between the Southern African Margin (e.g., Orange and Luderitz Basins) and key South American basins (e.g., Santos, Campos, and Pelotas).
  • Tectonic & Geodynamic Evolution: Updated regional understanding of rift-to-drift history, crustal architecture, and continental breakdown along the South Atlantic margins.
  • Deep-Water & Ultra-Deep-Water Reservoirs: Reservoir provenance, turbidite architecture, depositional controls, and diagenetic impacts on high-quality deep-water reservoirs across both margins.
  • Source Rock & Petroleum Systems: Charge timing, heat flow, source maturity, and migration pathways across conjugate rifted margins.
  • Emerging & Play-Opening Frontiers: Evaluation of untested plays, deep-water traps, and onshore basin extensions to identify the next generation of giant prospective resources.
  • Advanced Technology Application: Deployment of high-resolution seismic imaging, quantitative interpretation, and novel geoscientific approaches to mitigate exploration risk in complex play settings.
  • Exploration Strategy & Path to Commercialization: Current industry updates, future drilling projections, and key technical and operational considerations for bringing deep-water frontier discoveries to development.
