Integrating Subsurface Modeling and Monitoring for Geoenergy Futures

Achieving a sustainable geoenergy future requires the safe and efficient use of the subsurface for applications such as geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and geological carbon sequestration (GCS). Among these, GCS is a critical strategy for mitigating climate change by securely storing CO₂ in deep saline aquifers. This talk highlights how subsurface fluid flow simulation, coupled fluid-geomechanical modeling, and distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) can address key challenges in GCS and broader geoenergy systems. Topics include numerical modeling of geological reservoirs, prediction of reservoir deformation and storage integrity, DFOS-based monitoring of CO₂-induced fracture growth, and simulation-based assessment of potential groundwater impacts. By integrating predictive modeling with real-time monitoring, this work supports secure, large-scale CO₂ storage and advances broader subsurface resource management.
