Among the more than 70 collections to peruse on the Datapages Archives, one of the most significant collections is the non-peer reviewed Search and Discovery online journal. The content is sourced from you. AAPG members and students from all the sections and regions submit up-to-date research in the form of meeting abstracts, posters, extended abstracts, and presentation slide decks, and manuscripts.

“Search and Discovery strives to provide the latest geoscientific information, especially related to energy sources and other natural resources, to the greatest number of users in the most expeditious time-frame by means of the most appropriate electronic media,” reads the mission statement.

Search and Discovery’s story began around 1998 when John Shelton, Ted Beaumont and Ron Hart discussed the idea of an online journal for explorationists. In 2000, then-AAPG Executive Director Rick Fritz recommended that the Executive Committee authorize Search and Discovery as an AAPG publishing medium. The first editorial board was Ted Beaumont, Ron Hart, Mike Horn, Doug Peters and John Shelton. In that year, 21 articles were posted. Today, Search and Discovery has more than 84,000 articles.

Search and Discovery is widely read, logging more than 400,000 users last year.

Datapages keeps Search and Discovery growing, thanks to you and your contributions through the work of our long-time, valued webmaster, Emin Isayev. Many processes have changed over the years. Some believe that Search and Discovery has access to, and automatically publishes their conference proceedings, but this is not the case. We rely on you, our content providers, to submit your research to us. Thank you to Snjezana, Brittnee, Arthur, Mallory, Trey, and the 830 authors that have submitted your publications to Search and Discovery over the last 12 months. There was a wonderful showing by the 2025 ICE Rio participants, the 2025 MEDiNA and AAPG Middle East GTW participants, the 2026 CCUS presenters, and the AAPG Southwest Section conferences of 2024 and 2025.
