The What is the DPA?

AAPG’s Division of Professional Affairs was created in 1968 to promote professionalism, professional well-being, and high ethical standards in the practice of petroleum geoscience. Adherence to the AAPG Code of Ethics and the Code of Conduct are core to the DPA.

We offer a Board Certification program which will soon be comparable to national and state licensing and certification. Board Certified members are considered to be qualified to provide reserves estimation.

We may also add a new Subject Matter Expert level, which will allow those in our industry with specialized technical expertise to be recognized.

Who belongs to the DPA?

DPA membership represents the apex of the AAPG. The certification process and DPA membership are open to all petroleum geologists, petroleum geophysicists or coal geologists of good character with a minimum of 8 years’ experience – less if you have a Master’s or Ph.D. degree.

Almost all AAPG leadership, past and present, belong to the DPA. Certification is reciprocal with the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (SIPES), American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and The Geological Society of London (GSL).

Why should I apply to the DPA?

Companies and investors seek the most qualified personnel available. Certification and membership provide credibility and recognition by peers, employers, and government agencies.

The DPA offers professional development hours (PDH) and ethics training via online seminars and in-person short courses. It also supports diverse and inclusive programming to build and sustain your professional network such as mentoring and expert panels. There are a number of honors and awards given to outstanding members.

Finally, the DPA provides programming on career transitions in early, mid and late career stages.

How do I apply for the DPA?

An application form, academic credentials, and three letters of reference from sponsors will be evaluated by the DPA Board of Certification.

DPA also offers the ‘Provisional’ membership option for those who do not yet meet the 8-year experience requirement for certification.

Cost

The application fee for Certification has been waived until June 30, 2024. Annual dues are $50 USD per year thereafter.
