Course Content

Panelists discuss the newest developments and directions in drones, satellite imagery, and other ways to acquire and process images of the Earth's surface. They discuss the technologies and processes they use, and the costs and overall return on investment with respect to new opportunities and business development.

Dan Taranik, Exploration Mapping

Dan is the Managing Director for ExplorationMapping Group and has over 30 years of global experience specializing in remotesensing for the mineral, petroleum and related environmental industries. He was educated in the United Statesgraduating with Bachelor’s degree in Geophysics from the University of Nevada,Reno and a Masters degree in Economic Geology from the University of Colorado,Boulder. A former Chairman of the Geological Remote Sensing Group inLondon and also former Chairman of the ESRI Mining User Group, Dan hasextensive global experience with natural resources exploration, extraction and relatedenvironmental work. He worked with themajor miners Rio Tinto, Anglo American and BHP in global technical roles beforeforming Exploration Mapping Group in 2012.

Shaun Baker, AWS

Shaun Baker currently leads the Americas Solution Architecture function for AWS’ Energy team. Previously, Shaun served as Director and Chief Enterprise Architect for BP’s Data and Digital Platforms. In this role Shaun led Strategy and Architecture for AWS, the journey to hybrid cloud for the support of austere environments, the data fabric, data lakes and evolution to a microservice based organization. Also, while at BP, Shaun led the global Networks organization. Shaun and his team consolidated and insourced large components of the previously fragmented network support activities at BP into a single DevOps-centric organization aligned with BP’s digital ambition. They delivered a major transformation that brought greater efficiencies and agility through infrastructure-as-code, software defined networks, converged infrastructure and cloud-based approaches to network security. Prior to BP, Shaun led BMC Software’s Salesforce.com Amazon Web Services (AWS)application development practice and led one of the first Sr Mgr - Solutions Architecture Config-Price-Quote implementations using native APEX. Additionally, Shaun served six years as a Captain in the United States Army, holding a variety of technical leadership roles culminating as Head of Voice Telecommunications for the US Forces in Iraq and IT Architect for the US Army I Corps. Shaun holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the US Military Academy at West Point and a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University. He is based out of Houston, Texas, USA. Shaun has two children, girls, ages nine and two. In his spare time, Shaun enjoys running, hiking, skiing, and experimenting with new technologies in his home lab. He is particularly proud of his near-sentient espresso machine and contributes regularly to various open-source communities

Fernando Lopez, EVP Business & Commercial Development, Kairos Aerospace

Fernando leads the Business and Commercial Development team at Kairos Aerospace. He has extensive domestic and international experience and expertise in strategy, sales, business development, operational management, marketing and technology. He has significant experience in executing successful long-term business strategies, commercial models, sales and business development plans, and partnerships. Fernando earned his MBA from Texas A&M University, has several Professional Certifications, and a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Sunil Garg, President, DataVedik

Sunil Garg is the founder and CEO of dataVediK, a Houston based startup focused on sustainable living. dataVediK is a building a Hyper-Converged Data and Analytics Platform for Energy Industry which satisfies the critical customer business needs around optimizing operational efficiency, enhancing employee productivity, improving safety, faster and reliable decision making and reducing carbon footprint using the power of AI and Machine Learning. Prior to this, he spent 20+ years establishing and growing Data Management, Big Data and Analytics business for Schlumberger. Sunil has deep understanding of Oil and Gas data, Data Science & ML and uses the combination to build end user centric solutions. He is a member of several industry organizations and forums like SPE, AAPG, PPDM, SPDM, OSDU and Rice Alliance. Sunil is a sought-after speaker at various industry conferences and conducts Big Data, Machine Learning and Blockchain trainings for the Industry, the Government and the Academia. He is also an active angel investor and a charter member of TiE, an organization whose mission is to foster entrepreneurship through mentoring, networking, funding and incubation.

Nathan Campbell, Juniper Unmanned

Nathan is based in Colorado and works with Juniper Unmanned as a Magnetometer Specialist and Senior Field Operations Technician. He was educated at the University of Texas – San Antonio with a Bachelor’s degree in Music and at Oklahoma State University with a Master’s degree in Geology - Geophysics. His research involves integrating smartphone sensors for geophysical applications. In the last 3 years, he has focused much of his energy on designing aerial magnetic surveys for drones, developing software for processing in the field, and reducing noise on magnetometer platforms. When he is not operating drones, you can find Nathan either playing guitar or trying to get better at foosball.
