It has become clear that we as an industry are at a CROSSROADS – triggered both by the pandemic and low oil prices, as well as fundamental structural changes to the global energy sector with an increasing focus on decarbonization and the rise and growth of renewables. We will need to act and think in new ways. In addition to being more digital, more data-enabled and more innovative, we also have to be more integrated and more collaborative! These elements will all form the new “geoscientist” to be able to Face the Future.

Maurice Nessim, based in Houston, is the President of the Society of exploration Geophysicist (SEG), the world’s most respected geoscience professional organization in our industry.
His current responsibilities include the development and implementation of the vision and strategies associated with applied geophysics science innovation and geophysicists development to improve and accelerate energy exploration and discovery.
Maurice has over 35 years of energy industry experience in various management and technical positions. He began his career with Schlumberger as a geophysicist and progressed to chief area geophysicist of the Middle East and Africa. Over the past 20 years, Maurice held several senior positions in Schlumberger, including area vice president for Middle East, Africa and Asia; area vice president for North and South America; and global vice president of operations. He was named vice president marketing and technology for the Schlumberger Reservoir Management Group, and was the first vice president of Schlumberger Geosolutions.
In 2012, Maurice became the first president of Schlumberger Petro Technical Services. He was named the President of WesternGeco in 2015 and up to 2021.
Maurice has BS and MSc degrees in physics and geophysics and has won several prestigious awards, including the Schlumberger Chairman’s Award in 2006. He authored and co-authored over 25 papers that have been presented in various international conferences including EAGE, SEG, SPE and AAPG.
He has been an SEG Active Member since 1991 and a member of the EAGE, SPE and AAPG. In 2015, he served as SEG Director at Large and in 2017, was elected Chairman of the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC) and in 2019 was elected to serve on the SEG Foundation board of directors.
