In Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), hydraulic stimulation is used to increase the flow rate achievable during circulation between geothermal wells. The technology promises to unlock greatly increased geothermal production. Recent projects have applied principles from multistage hydraulic fracturing and achieved dramatically improved results, generating renewed optimism about the scalability of the approach. This course will cover key concepts related to hydraulic fracturing and reservoir engineering in EGS. The goal will be to teach geoscientists and engineers about the key issues and parameters related to designing EGS stimulation and projecting future production.

This course will be helpful for engineers interested in building more understanding of hydraulic stimulation and reservoir engineering for Enhanced Geothermal Systems.

Course Objectives

  1. Basics of geothermal energy
  2. Historical experience with EGS
  3. Stimulation mechanisms - fundamentals and field experience
  4. Key physical processes
  5. Modern/recent case studies
  6. Design parameters for economic optimization
  7. Effect of thermoelastic stresses
  8. Circulating with CO2
