Like many of my age cohort, I often listen to podcasts on my daily commute to work. One of my favorites is Motley Fool’s “Rule Breakers,” a stock market-oriented podcast by David Gardner. One of the common refrains he uses to describe his stock-selecting philosophy is that he looks for “dark clouds I can see through.” The premise is simple: if a company has been beaten down for a good reason, but you have line of sight on that issue being resolved, there exists an opportunity to acquire at a good value and profit from the recovery. Can we see through the dark clouds that hang over the industry today, to a brighter future?

Along with the rest of the world, the AAPG-YP London Chapter did not escape the repercussions of the gloomy pandemic; adapting to the virtual world was necessary. In the “normal” world, attending a career fair has always been a top priority for any graduating geoscientist, especially in these challenging times for the industry when many jobs have been cut off. On the other hand, many new jobs have sprung up with the energy transition. What are the transferable skills? Is it still worthwhile to get a master’s degree in an oil and gas-related field? Is it still possible to have a career in oil and gas? These were just some of the vital and timely questions raised at the virtual career fair organized in December by the YP London Chapter members.

Everything was set for AAPG, EAGE and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists to hold the 14th Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition in March 2020 in Manama, Bahrain. Like other organizers, the Young Professional and Student Committee worked hard to implement a rich and interactive week-long program for students and young professionals of various international institutions and organizations.

The month of July 2020 was indeed an eventful one on AAPG’s calendar, as various divisions and regions of our great Association underwent changes in leadership. The young professionals arm of AAPG Africa Region was not left behind, as the baton of leadership was passed to Philip Ajaebili, ably supported by AAPG Africa Region Program Manager Delia Kuye, AAPG Middle East and Africa Region Director Abeer Zubaidi and a team of dedicated YP representatives in several African countries to build on the great efforts of past leaders and YP representatives in the region.

Since its inception in 1994, the Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition series – or, “GEO,” as it is better known – has grown to become the main geosciences event in the Middle East Region and beyond, providing a platform for knowledge sharing, exchange and dissemination as well as an excellent opportunity to interact with major upstream companies, service providers and academia. The GEO Executive Committee made the decision to postpone the event to Oct. 4-7, 2021 in response to the global spread of COVID-19.
