The story of the industry first women to work as petroleum geologists – the challenging conditions they faced from both society and their male peers; the men who helped open doors to opportunity; and the first signs of how valuable and significant women would be to the industry.
Women cited include Helen Plummer (the first woman hired), Reba Masterson (the first woman to develop a career in the industry), Fredrica Probst and Linda Miller (the first women entrepreneurs), Eunice Eirich, Bess Stiles and Fanny Carter Edson.

This year is a pivotal year for the AAPG, in order to make it more nimble and adaptable to a rapidly changing business and social environment. The ultimate goal is for the AAPG to continue to be the “go to” association for petroleum geoscience, regardless of market conditions and budgeting constraints.
Women have come a long way in the last 100 years, transforming the workplace and the oilfield as they’ve fought their way into roles previously considered off-limits to them. As much as attitudes and expectations have changed, however, challenges remain as women continue to blaze new trails in the industry. These were the recurring themes at the Pioneering Women in Petroleum Geology Forum.
This year’s Annual Convention and Exhibition will feature a special forum titled “Pioneering Women in Petroleum Geology,” which will be held April 1 in the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
