Being involved as an officer in the DPA has truly opened my eyes to the importance we play to the organization and most importantly to our members. It has been a great pleasure for me to work with the people that really make the organization work.

CERA was a diverse and dynamic week. A record-breaking 4,500 CEO’s, leaders, energy ministers and global representatives from more than 70 countries attended the March 4-9 event to ponder the future of the industry. And this year, AAPG got to play an important role in this conversation.

Whether you are an energy executive, investor, geoscientist, or consultant, AAPG’s Global Super Basins Leadership Conference, held 27-29 March 2018 in Houston, Texas at the Hilton Americas Hotel, will give you the information you need to be successful in the world’s most significant basins. Co-hosted by IHS Markit, the event will feature regional experts who will share their unique first-hand knowledge of each of the globe’s super basins.

Providing energy to the world is a heroic journey. In my preface to the 2017 DPA publication “Heritage of the Petroleum Geoscientist,” I wrote that the philosopher Joseph Campbell described that the world has a few stories, and many storytellers. The “Hero’s Journey” starts with a call to adventure, overcoming trials (think of the Greek character Odysseus), and returning to tell the story.

When considering the future of our industry, innovation and new technologies are always discussed. It might be splitting hairs but I believe that having a “view” toward the future could be more important.

Many years ago, I was on the undergraduate Columbia College eight man rowing team in New York. As I think back fondly on those college days, I realize that I learned a lot from my crew team experience on guiding and leading people. I learned that “leadership” is doing the right things, while “management” is doing things the right way. AAPG needs both.

In the earth sciences, most learned papers and books published focus on a specific geographic area (e.g. the Grand Canyon) or a topic (petrology of feldspar minerals). Such scholarly works are excellent but rarely is a comprehensive book published on a holistic topic like Understanding Oil and Gas Shows in the Search for Hydrocarbons, authored by John Dolson.

The upstream oil and gas business has two primary functions; the front-end loaded exploration phase and the development-focused harvest-mode which results in actual hydrocarbon production and revenue generation. Both of these processes require extensive geoscience input but the scope, techniques and time involved are quite different. This two-day workshop will focus on these two siblings; the first day will focus on mature field development and the second day will highlight exploration potential within the Asia Pacific region.

The gas transport in organic-rich shales involves different length-scales, from organic and inorganic pores to macro- and macrofractures. In order to upscale the fluid transport from nanoscale (flow through nanopores) to larger scales (to micro- and macrofractures), multicontinuum methodology is planned to be used.

As the surge in U.S. natural gas production has led to natural gas replacing coal for power generation, carbon dioxide emissions have declined. However, methane, the main component of natural gas, is itself a potent greenhouse gas, so any leaks during natural gas production and distribution will partially offset this benefit. This talk will assess data from improved monitoring of methane emissions and the role mitigation techniques and regulations play in minimizing methane leaks.
