The title of this month’s column reflects my personal philosophy and framework to address issues that face AAPG. The philosophy embraces AAPG’s Mission by: preserving the past advancements in the science of geology, especially as it relates to petroleum, natural gas, other subsurface fluids, and mineral resources; promoting the present technology of exploring for, finding, and producing these materials in an economically and environmentally sound manner; and fostering the spirit of scientific research throughout its membership to meet the needs of the future.

Outside the Toy Box

Digital transformation, including data management, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence are already at work in many industries, including retail and healthcare. And, many of these industries have learned that there is a commonality in the data collection, management, processing, manipulation and reporting they all do. It is a phenomenon the oil and gas sector has been slow to embrace, even though its needs are not all that different from those of these other fields.

The concept of digital transformation in the oil and gas industry gets talked about a lot these days, even though the phrase seems to have little specific meaning. So, will there really be some kind of extensive cyber-transformation of the industry over the next decade? “No,” said Tom Smith, president and CEO of Geophysical Insights in Houston. Instead, it will happen “over the next three years,” he predicted.

The 2019 AAPG / EMD Unconventional Research Group Meeting

Tuesday May 21, 2019 7:15 pm – 9 pm Room 214 A in the San Antonio Convention Center. It is on the Meeting Room level of the convention center. This year we are focusing on how much petroleum comes from come from outside the landing zone / reservoir (and the implications for inventory, spacing, etc.). The first three talks address this issue as well as the problems associated with geochemical techniques that attempt to quantify out-of-zone flow. Alton Brown will follow with a talk that builds on last year’s conversation about pressure generation during petroleum generation and explusion.

SC 03: The Techniques and Business Aspects of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage and the CO₂ Storage Resources Management System (SRMS)

As part of the international effort to combat global warming, significant attention is being given to ways to sequester (store for the long-term) carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. This one-day course will look at some of the ways in which carbon dioxide can be stored and provide a detailed review of the SRMS framework prepared by the Society of Petroleum Engineers to classify and categorize the storage volumes.
