3-D Seismic Volume Visualization in Color: Part 2

Seismic attributes help enhance the subtle subsurface geologic detail that might be difficult and time consuming to decipher from 3-D seismic amplitude data. Beginning with the simple computation of envelope, phase and frequency attributes in the 1970s, several dozen seismic attributes are generated these days containing disparate types of information. To bring together all this information and produce an accurate subsurface model, the multiple attributes need to be carefully visualized and displayed, and thus has become an important interpretation tool for seismic interpreters.

2019: The Year in Review

The oil and gas industry began 2019 hoping to thrive and ended the year mostly happy to survive. Offshore drilling dominated exploration but, despite several significant discoveries, reserve replacement rates remained low. Global geopolitical tensions simmered and sometimes boiled over throughout last year. In oil and gas prices, “Lower-for-Longer” came back to linger. The world saw abundant crude oil production and a surfeit of natural gas.

Pity the Permian Basin. Investors complain about disappointing returns from Permian production. Stockholders worry about the financial outlook for operators in the play. Lenders have started to cast a skeptical eye at the basin’s profit potential. So it’s surprising to find that a data-derived solution for addressing the Permian Basin’s current challenges might be readily available. And it’s somewhat startling to hear that, someday, unconventional resource plays in the United States could fly higher than ever.

Mineralogical composition and total organic carbon quantification using x-ray fluorescence data from the Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Group in southern Texas

Six southern Texas Eagle Ford cores were investigated to quantify mineralogical composition and total organic carbon (TOC). Machine learning of the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) data set was conducted using neural network analysis to predict mineralogies for L1, L2, and L3 and TOC for L1, L2, L3, Iona-1, Innes-1, and well “X.”

First 'WinGS' Scholarship Awarded by West Texas Geology Foundation

As women continue to make inroads and contributions to the once male-dominated oil industry, the West Texas Geology Foundation has taken a new step to encourage more women to enter the field. The foundation established and awarded its first Women in Geoscience Studies scholarship to Alondra Soltero, a graduate student at the University of Texas at El Paso. The Women in Geoscience Studies, or “WinGS” scholarship, established in 2018, is a minimum of $5,000 given to a female candidate studying in a geoscience field from a school in or around the Permian Basin.

UH's Jack Kenning Wins AAPG Student Poster Competition

The AAPG Student Poster Competition began in 1996, when a single first-place award was given to Ian Robert Gordon of UT Austin for his poster. Since then, the program has expanded, soon including international schools, leading to 2019, when four awards were given, some to international students. Jack Kenning, a second-year doctoral student in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at UH, won with a poster entitled “Controls of Cenozoic Mass Transport Deposits on Hydrocarbon Prospectivity of the Mexican Ridges Fold-Belt, Western Gulf of Mexico.”

This one-day course will look at some of the ways in which carbon dioxide can be stored and provide a detailed review of the SRMS framework prepared by the Society of Petroleum Engineers to classify and categorize the storage volumes.
