Are Critical Minerals the New Oil and Gas?

Electric vehicles have been targeted as an important transition toward a greener planet. Yet the manufacturing of lithium ion batteries is creating a significant environmental impact. As it stands, most large volumes of lithium-bearing rocks and brines mined in Australia, Chile, Argentina and other countries must be shipped to China, which controls 65 percent of the supply chains for battery-ready lithium chemicals and 73 percent of the manufacturing of lithium ion batteries. While carbon emissions from shipping is substantial, the greatest environmental impact comes from the actual processing of lithium and the manufacturing of its end products. The United States could play a significant role in solving this problem.

The prediction of organic-rich reservoir facies within the Late Pennsylvanian Cline shale (also known as Wolfcamp D), Midland Basin, Texas

This study evaluates the suitability of well log response to predict occurrence and organic richness of Cline shale depositional facies, an unconventional reservoir in the Permian Basin. Successful horizontal drilling correlates well with the most organically enriched petrofacies.

Geochemical characterization and classification of crude oils of the Permian Basin, west Texas and southeastern New Mexico

Analysis of 50 oil samples indicate the presence of 5 genetic groups in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. The results of the study have established a fundamental basis for developing play combinations, which embrace genetically similar oils.

Super Basins and Sustainability

Do super basins have a role in sustainable development? The short answer is, Yes. Super basins can be part of a sustainable energy and environmental future for the planet. A more complex answer is: It depends on how you define “sustainable.” In the view of the oil and gas industry, sustainability has an economic component and an environmental component. Hydrocarbon-based energy is essential for a sustainable world economy in that view, and it will be for a long time to come.

Geologists get the basics right, in general, but sometimes they might be thinking about source rock the wrong way. They are definitely talking about it in the wrong way.
