An uncertainty approach to estimate recoverable reserves from the Bakken petroleum system in the North Dakota part of the Williston Basin

Instead of using discrete values for properties that influence the volumetric calculation for recoverable reserves from the Middle Bakken, Pronghorn, and Three Forks reservoir rocks in the Williston Basin in North Dakota, an uncertainty-based assessment method was used. Various estimates have been published in the past that attempt to quantify recoverable reserves from the Bakken petroleum system.

At the recent URTeC conference, I gave a luncheon talk about the importance of the geology within the Permian Basin as it relates to the unconventional and horizontal plays within the basin. As we move into the “mining stage,” one tends to forget that these plays exist because of the geology. Technology allows us to get the oil out, but the geology put the oil in.

Big Oil Moves Toward Big Shale

Some of the world’s largest oil companies have pumped up their shale investments recently, targeting increased future production from shale oil plays. At the same time, some independents have been cutting back on shale spending, in part because of lower oil and gas prices and shareholder demands for improved returns. The result is a not-so-subtle shift toward shale dominance by Big Oil.

Factors controlling source and reservoir characteristics in the Niobrara shale oil system, Denver Basin

This paper clarifies the controls of oil retention in the Niobrara Formation, Denver Basin, in the western United States. Sweet spots have been recognized using a total of 98 core samples from 5 wells with maturities covering the oil window.

A Natural Gas Success Story

From high-altitude, windswept prairies in southwestern Wyoming, the span of the powerful Wind River and Wyoming Ranges can be seen in the distance. This is home to the Pinedale Anticline Project and the Jonah Field, located in Sublette County, Wyo. In 2000, this was the site of one of the most productive gas fields in the continental United States. Gas reserves were estimated at up to 40 trillion cubic feet. That was enough to serve the nation’s entire natural gas demand for 22 months.
