A History of the Energy Minerals Division of the AAPG

In 2017, AAPG celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding in Tulsa, Okla. This same year was also the 40th anniversary of the establishment the AAPG Energy Minerals Division. The EMD has evolved as an organization over the past 40 years to reflect the changes in the mix of resources fueling the world’s ever-increasing energy demand.

Salt of the Earth

Mark G. Rowan, one of two recipients of this year’s Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award, was more than just a little bit surprised about his selection – as much for being considered as for winning. Rowan received the honor for “his outstanding contributions to research on salt tectonics, fold-thrust belts, passive margins, diapirs and salt sheets, salt-sediment interaction and cross-section restoration.”

Utah Oil Shale Closer to Becoming a Reality

On September 26, 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued their Record of Decision (ROD) to approve a 14-mile long “energy corridor” across public lands in Uintah County, Utah to support development of a planned 27,000 acre South Project oil shale mine to be developed by Estonia-based Enefit American Oil. The ROD followed a six-year environmental study and preparation of the Final Environmental Impact Study issued by the BLM following extensive public comment.

41st Annual Trustee Associates Meeting

Nestled between Idaho’s Boulder-White Clouds and the Sawtooth Range, between a batholith and Paleozoic sediments, and the volcanic Snake River Plain is a narrow, linear hollow known as “Sun Valley.” Sun Valley has been a seasonal home to many celebrities, including American novelist Ernest Hemingway, and champion skiers since the late 1930s. And for a few wonderful days in August, Sun Valley Resort was home to our Trustee Associates for their annual meeting.

A Day to Remember: The Discovery of Oil in North Dakota

“Light the flare.” With those words, Blackie Davidson tossed up a lighted, oil-soaked rag and the gas started to burn in a 30-foot-long flare. This was the real beginning – the opening of the Williston Basin to oil production on April 4, 1951. The discovery of oil will always be remembered by those who were in North Dakota at the time. Its effect on the state and the nation can never be properly assessed.
