Charles ‘Gil’ Mull, ‘Pioneer of Alaskan Geology,’ Passes at 86

The geologist who helped lead the historical discovery of the Prudhoe Bay oilfield in 1968 and who carved a path for later discoveries that provided invaluable resources for the United States has passed. Charles “Gil” G. Mull, died at age 86 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease in Salt Lake City on Oct. 3.

USGS Geologist Celebrated for Laying Groundwork for North Slope Discoveries

Initially in charge of funding energy research and resource assessments, Houseknecht received a fateful telephone call in 1995 from former USGS Research Geologist Don Gautier, who asked him to participate in a field session in Alaska. Now, 26 years later, David Houseknecht has been awarded the Wallace E. Pratt Memorial Award for the best AAPG Bulletin article in 2019, which outlines a detailed geological framework of the North Slope to explain the geology of recent discoveries and delineate the potential for future discoveries.

Pacific Section Conference Soars with Virtual Field Trip to the Monterey Formation

AAPG Pacific Section thrilled attendees with a stunning interactive Google Earth-based virtual field trip. Imagine being able to experience the stunning and intricate layered geology of the Monterey Formation through a Google Earth high-resolution, interactive program. Richard Behl, geology professor at California State University at Long Beach, likes to take geologists into the field, walking through the cool surf and sunny climate. At the Pacific Section virtual conference in late June, Behl offered up what he described as a “Monterey Formation Bucket List” of beach outcrop stops traversing more than 500 miles along the California coast from Crystal Cove and up to Bowling Ball Beach near Point Arena. That was only the start of the multiday technical program that was both innovative and technically enriching.

Hope for Alaska's Oil Projects Fueled by Recent Court Decisions

Just as Alaska was bracing itself for the economic fallout of the Biden administration’s adversarial stance on oil and gas, two recent court decisions are giving the state hope. On June 15, a federal judge lifted the administration’s temporary ban on federal lease sales, clearing the way for a highly anticipated lease sale in the prolific National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska. And, on May 26, a brief filed by the U.S. Department of Justice affirmed that the Willow Project, a major discovery in NPRA that has been tied up in environmental-related lawsuits, complies with environmental regulations. While it remains unclear how soon the NPRA lease sale can take place, it is expected that the Willow project, one of the North Slope’s largest projects in recent years, will move forward.

The Los Angeles Times once called William Rintoul “one of the West’s most unusual writers.” Oil field journalists are indeed rare and are becoming even rarer. Nevertheless, their contributions are not to be ignored. Petroleum history is a chronicle of the largest industry that has shaped the modern world for the past 150 years or so. There have been many authors of the history of the oil and gas industry, but William Rintoul was different. It is impossible to decouple California’s petroleum history from Rintoul’s legacy.

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Using Geochemistry to Understand Production GOR in Unconventional Reservoirs", on Wednesday, 8 June 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). A common question in appraisal or development of either conventional or unconventional reservoirs is understanding the control on production yield (stb/mmscf) or GOR (stb/scf). Fluid and/or rock-based geochemistry is a useful tool in conjunction with engineering principles to understand what the primary mechanism(s) are controlling production yield. Here we will look at the use of geochemistry to access yield for tight reservoirs.
