In the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 23. No matter where you are in the world, it is always good to give thanks. I am thankful to organizers of this year’s highly successful International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) in London and I am personally thankful for a profession that allows each of us to work in teams to solve challenging problems while we create energy abundance, prosperity and a better way of life for the world.

The first major technical breakthrough in petroleum geology was foraminiferal micropaleontology – made by three young “girls” in 1921, which, within three years, created oil industry jobs for 300 micropaleontologists and gave rise to micropaleontology courses in 31 geology departments.

With more than 18 percent of the membership based in and around Houston, if we haven’t been directly impacted by the storms ourselves, many of us have friends and colleagues who have been.

When Hurricane Harvey brought disastrous flooding to the U.S. Gulf Coast, it threatened more than Houston residential neighborhoods. A significant part of the nation’s energy infrastructure is located inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and a network of production platforms and offshore pipelines stretches eastward from there to Louisiana and beyond.

Rebuilding from Hurricane Harvey will take time, and there is no doubt that the way that we learn, exchange knowledge, and work together will undergo changes. It is vital to establish strong networks so that our knowledge and experience come together to forge a strong future. Please share your experiences and suggest ways to team up to gain new skills and knowledge.

As President John F. Kennedy famously said in his 1962 speech at Rice University in Houston, difficult challenges serve “to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills.” I am happy to report that the super basin concept I wrote about in my July column is working to focus energies and skills within AAPG.

The following short course option was developed for geology and geophysics students that have not had much exposure to how geoscience is applied in industry. It can be tailored for undergraduate juniors and seniors or graduate students. The agenda can be modified to meet specific needs and time constraints. Contact the presenter to discuss options.

This is a less-technical education topic. It can be condensed to an hour or given as 2 two-hour sessions. It stresses selected controversial aspects of fracking that touch some combination of environment and economics and includes a short video of how fracking is done.

In 1991, Gulf Indonesia and its partners discovered South Sumatra Basin’s first major gas field at Dayung in the Corridor PSC. A key feature of this field is that most of the reserves are held within fractured basement rocks of pre-Tertiary age.
