Challenges to Deepwater Reservoir Characterization

It is no secret that deepwater depositional systems hold some of the largest petroleum reservoirs on Earth. To get those reserves out safely, effectively and economically from such depths requires technology, expertise, and a little bit of luck. The challenges associated with doing that – determining the presence, distribution and quality of those reserves – is the work of the Quantitative Clastics Laboratory at the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin.

AAPG has been a pillar of the scientific community for more than 100 years, with a lengthy history of collaboration and rewarding relationships that extend beyond the Association. Like the rise to international success of Nigerian musician King Sunny Adé, AAPG has grown beyond its American roots to serve a global community of energy geoscientists as well as professionals working in adjacent functions like data science, carbon capture, use and sequestration, and various engineering disciplines.

3-D Visualization and Geobody Picking of Amplitude Anomalies in Deepwater Seismic Data

'The geobody tool provides a means for an interpreter to rapidly visualize the extent and orientation of anomalous geologic features of interest. However, the last decade has seen an exponential growth in both the number and size of 3-D seismic surveys. Augmented by multiple attribute volumes for each survey, these large data volumes provide both an aid and a burden on the interpreter, whose goal is to wade through all these data with the goal of extracting patterns that correlate to a geologic model, which can then be used for oil and gas exploration and development. As many of the world’s oil and gas resources lie beneath the oceans, the advances in exploration, drilling and production technologies have also focused in those areas. '

Remembering Russell and Mary Dorsey

Russell A. Dorsey Jr. was an AAPG member who loved adventure, loved traveling and spent more than 30 years using his skills as a geologist for Esso and ExxonMobil in locations around the world. His wife, Mary, a Florida native with an ear for languages plus musical and artistic gifts of her own, equally embraced the journeys that Russell’s geological career afforded them, and together they left a record of not just involvement in but active impact on historical, archaeological, civic and cultural groups wherever they resided. Both are now deceased – Russell in 2001, and Mary earlier this year on May 19 – but their love of preservation and working together to help ensure better futures to global populations was manifested once again recently in a dramatic way for the AAPG Foundation.

Efficiency in Unconventionals is Key to Energy Future

“The beauty of the unconventionals is, while they’re expensive, we know where they are.” That’s Carlos Torres-Verdin, Brian James Jennings memorial endowed chair and Zarrow centennial professor of petroleum engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, talking about the promise of unconventional energy production in the United States, both from an industry standpoint and with a view to its position in the country’s future energy mix. According to a study by the Harvard University Business School, by 2030, 3.8 million jobs, half of which would be accessible to middle-skilled workers, could potentially be supported by the development of unconventional resources.

Lithological, petrophysical, and seal properties of mass-transport complexes, northern Gulf of Mexico

Evaluation of deeply buried Pleistocene mass-transport complexes in the northern Gulf of Mexico shows highly variable lithology that is acoustically faster and more resistive than similar mud-rich deposits at a similar burial depth. It also shows velocity and resistivity increasing with depth.

CarbonSAFE Project Uses Core Technology to Identify CO₂ Storage Potential

Increasing global concern about climate change and its impact on the environment and society has led to a variety of strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and find places to store it. Many companies are hard at work to perfect methods of carbon capture, use, and storage. Franek Hasiuk, associate scientist at Kansas Geological Survey, said CCUS is the best technology available to reduce emissions produced by the global economy. Hasiuk is part of a team of scientists working on the Integrated Midcontinent Stacked Carbon Storage Hub, a project to investigate subsurface geology in southwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska and demonstrate the viability of injecting CO₂ into underground rock layers.
