Earlier this year, in a surprise move, the Texas Sunset Advisory Committee recommended to eliminate the Texas Board of Professional Geology and repeal the Texas Geoscience Practice Act. Local Texas geoscience organizations and societies mobilized quickly to protest this decision and move forward.

By the time they are drilled, almost all exploratory ventures today will have been geotechnically, statistically and economically analyzed to estimate their ultimate recovery of oil or natural gas, or its EUR, and its present monetary value, or PV, given discovery. This process is generally known as “exploration risk analysis” and it evolved primarily as a response to an endemic problem: explorers were discovering less than half of the EURs they forecast for their investors.

Generally, the fine-grained shale rocks are found to be composed of 50 to 70 percent clay, anywhere between 25 to 40 percent silt- and clay-sized quartz, and 5 percent of minerals including feldspars and carbonates, comprising the total rock volume. A variety of techniques such as X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and electron microscopy are available, which help us understand the type of clay minerals present in a shale sample.

In 2017, AAPG celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding in Tulsa, Okla. This same year was also the 40th anniversary of the establishment the AAPG Energy Minerals Division. We are pleased to announce that AAPG has scheduled this research conference to be held June 18-20, 2019 in Houston, Texas. Convenors for this conference are Dr. Dietmar (Deet) Schumacher (GeoField Services, Paris) and Dr. Gary K. Rice (GeoFrontiers Corp., Dallas). The past two decades have seen not only a continued interest in the topic of hydrocarbon microseepage, but have resulted in ongoing development of new and novel exploration technologies and applications. These have led to improved integration of geochemistry with geology, geophysics, and remote sensing, and have resulted in more efficient exploration and development strategies. We hope to bring together 70-90 international experts from industry, academia, and government to review the state of knowledge of hydrocarbon microseepage in light of the new body of data and insights gained in the past two decades and current research directions.

In 1991, Gulf Indonesia and its partners discovered South Sumatra Basin’s first major gas field at Dayung in the Corridor PSC. A key feature of this field is that most of the reserves are held within fractured basement rocks of pre-Tertiary age.

Microseismicity induced by hydraulic fracture stimulation of a horizontal well was mapped with a near-surface buried array. Distinct linear trends of events were not parallel to the direction of fast shear wave polarization measured in the reservoir with a crossed-dipole anisotropy tool. Analysis of core from a nearby well revealed numerous calcite-filled fractures that did not induce shear wave polarization, but did significantly impact the failure behavior of the reservoir rock during the stimulation treatment. Hydraulic fracture simulation with DFN modeling and source mechanism analysis supports the interpretation of reactivated existing fractures rather than the formation of hydraulically-induced tensile fractures.

Analysis of microseismicity induced by hydraulic fracture stimulation in the Marcellus Shale shows changes in stress state for different zones of failure. During the treatment, shear failure occurs on both the J1 and J2 fracture orientations in response to different maximum stress orientations, indicating localized changes in the orientation during the treatment. Reactivation of a fault near the wellbore is associated with failure mechanisms with a higher volumetric component, indicating possible inflation of faults and fractures by the introduction of the slurry. Quantification of the stress conditions that are associated with inflation could potentially be used to optimize the stimulation by identifying which fractures will preferentially take on slurry volume.
