Experts have spoken about its oil potential for decades. Finally, Iraq is primed to fulfill its promise – and its opportunities aren’t just for the super-big players, either.

Explorer Emphasis

Still standing: Despite the ill-fated Macondo disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the industry not only weathered the storm but emerged strongly, thanks largely to notable discoveries around the world.

A year to remember: Here’s a look at the important discoveries that made global “hit” parade in 2007.

“Geopolitics and headlines have been controlling oil prices for easily the past seven years,” noted Michael J. Economides.

Quantity, not quality: The past year saw only a few jaw-dropping discoveries, but some important world developments opened new areas, bolstered existing production and provided a solid foundation for the future.

It has a new name, a new energy and a new lineup of experts, all primed to spread geoscience knowledge around the world. “It” is AAPG’s newly named Global Distinguished Lecture Program – emphasis on the “global” – which dates back to 1941 but continues to be the Association’s flagship initiative for offering the latest in geologic science to AAPG affiliated geological societies and universities.
