Optimizing reservoirs and developing an ever-evolving intelligent model of a reservoir are key concerns for operators, particularly in challenging times. For that reason, they must have good production geologists on hand. A production geologist bridges a number of disciplines, most notably geology and engineering, but also geochemistry, geophysics, and numerical methods. Welcome to an interview with Terngu Utim who discusses production geology, its new potential and opportunities.

Geoscientists have more opportunities than ever to make working with drones and drone data part of their skill set and services rendered. But, there are often a number of misconceptions, especially when getting started. Welcome to an interview with Michael Nash, who provides a reality check about drones and drone capabilities. Please note that the drones references are the small drones used by the general public, and are not the large UAVs used by the military and other entities.

Economic oil and gas fields have been increasingly found in deep-water continental margins for the past decade, where potential prospects record the key tectonic events associated with plate breakup and continental drift. In these regions, the exploitation of economic resources must take into account sustainable practices and environmental concerns of local populations. This talk will present case studies from multiple continental margins to then extrapolate major findings to basins in SE Asia.

In a world moving to net-zero emissions during the COVID-driven oil price collapse, there remain important scientific and business opportunities for geoscientists, particularly those with expertise in stratigraphy, sedimentology, reservoir geology and hydrocarbon production. In this webinar, Dr. Julio Friedmann, senior research scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University discusses the challenges this community faces which are not scientific or technical, but rather involve shifts in business model, policy and global market trends. Webinar presented via Zoom on 11 December 2020 at 11:30 am CST (UTC-6).

VG Abstract

In comparison with the known boundary conditions that promote salt deformation and flow in sedimentary basins, the processes involved with the mobilization of clay-rich detrital sediments are far less well established. This talk will use seismic examples in different tectonic settings to document the variety of shale geometries that can be formed under brittle and ductile deformations.

The Betic hinterland, in the westernmost Mediterranean, constitutes a unique example of a stack of metamorphic units. Using a three-dimensional model for the crustal structure of the Betics-Rif area this talk will address the role of crustal flow simultaneously to upper-crustal low-angle faulting in the origin and evolution of the topography.
