The Caribbean has become a classic locus for unraveling regional paleogeographic evolution. Although there are a few who continue to question it, the collective efforts of these many geoscientists have led to numerous principles that demand a Pacific origin for the Caribbean oceanic lithosphere.

Unconventional resources have changed the exploration and production business and are changing our profession. It’s a change for the better, where today geoscientists and engineers work closely to identify prospective areas, drill them and optimize recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.

AAPG Europe’s latest Geosciences Technology Workshop (GTW), “Fractured Reservoirs: The Geological, Geophysical and Engineering Tools to Crack Them,” provided the opportunity to visit the island of Sicily, steeped both in beauty and an active geological history. And what is a trip to Sicily without a visit to the tallest volcano in Europe?

An intriguing program is afoot to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Niobrara in south-central South Dakota. The assessment program was initiated in 2012, when the American Indian Higher Education Consortium funded a cooperative education program between the Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T).

The Wattenberg Field north of Denver has become a big deal in the industry since its discovery in 1970 by Amoco Production Company. It’s a twofer, kicking out both oil and natural gas. To many, mention of the field conjures up thoughts of the upper Cretaceous Niobrara shale, which is a prolific producer there, along with other geologic formations. The Codell sandstone, for example, is a major pay in this giant field.

AAPG bestows the Robert R. Berg Award in recognition of a singular achievement in petroleum geoscience research. Mark Zoback’s research has advanced the industry’s understanding and application of geomechanics, but he’s also done important work in other areas.

Although Yemen is a single country today, it once consisted of three separate political entities. The territory’s first geological survey took place aboard the HMS Palinurus in 1862, when Henry Carter of the Geological Survey of India made a series of observations of the coastline; but the region was rarely visited and was considered as a poor oil prospect in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn all the aspects related to the understanding and modeling of fractured reservoirs. Attendees will take geologic concepts and use them in reservoir modeling through hands-on sessions devoted to the examination of outcrop, core and log data. They will use that information and a software to create 3D fractured reservoir models. Using actual Teapot Dome (Wyoming, USA) field data from the Tensleep and Niobrara Shale formations and a hands-on approach, the workshop allows the geoscientist to identify fractures and to construct predictive 3D fracture models that can be used to identify productive zones, plan wells and to create fracture porosity and permeability models for reservoir simulation.

Exercises throughout the course provide practical experience in well log correlation, contouring, interpretation of surface and subsurface, contoured maps, seismic interpretation, well log interpretation, and decline curve analysis.
