This course is a practical approach to defining reservoir fluid and pressure related natural fracture generation and fracture property alteration in conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
This interdisciplinary course encompasses the fields of rock mechanics, structural geology and petroleum engineering to address a wide range of geomechanical problems that arise during the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs.
Here is an introduction to the tools and techniques that geologists and geophysicists use to locate gas and oil, that drillers use to drill the wells and that petroleum engineers use to test and complete the wells and produce the gas and oil. Exercises throughout the course provide practical experience in well log correlation, contouring, interpretation of surface and subsurface, contoured maps, seismic interpretation, well log interpretation, and decline curve analysis.

This field trip will explore the outcrops in this Front Range area with the hope that participants will come away with new concepts and insights into how the Rocky Mountains were formed.
This two-day trip will visit outcropping reservoir rocks and structures that typify the framework of the prolific Rocky Mountains petroleum province. The drive from Denver to Casper and return will transect numerous basement uplifts and foreland basins.
The attendee will gain a working knowledge concerning how faults and fractures develop and their terminology, methodologies utilized in collecting and analyzing fracture data, characteristics of faults and fractures that affect the sedimentary units (including black shales) in the northern Appalachian Basin of New York state, and tectonics that led to the formation of the structures in the northern Appalachian Basin and the adjacent Appalachian Orogen.
Geomechanics – in both completions and drilling operations – has become a critical technology in the development of Unconventional Plays. This course presents the basics of oil field geomechanics and its application to unconventional developments; specifically, the role of stress, pore pressure, mechanical properties, and natural fractures on hydraulic fracturing operations.
Participants will explore a number of classic geological sites that affected the Lewis and Clark expedition in Montana on this six-day excursion.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn all the aspects related to the understanding and modeling of fractured reservoirs. Attendees will take geologic concepts and use them in reservoir modeling through hands-on sessions devoted to the examination of outcrop, core and log data. They will use that information and a software to create 3D fractured reservoir models. Using actual Teapot Dome (Wyoming, USA) field data from the Tensleep and Niobrara Shale formations and a hands-on approach, the workshop allows the geoscientist to identify fractures and to construct predictive 3D fracture models that can be used to identify productive zones, plan wells and to create fracture porosity and permeability models for reservoir simulation.
This four-day trip to the internationally-significant Wanganui Basin and North Taranaki coastal sections will examine Late Miocene to Pleistocene components of shelf- to basin-floor depositional systems deposited during an overall tectonically-controlled regressive phase. We will examine and discuss the interplay between tectonics and sea-level change, and the reservoir architecture and sequence stratigraphic framework of these well-exposed rocks. The outcrop geology will be supported by a range of seismic, well and supplementary industry data.
This trip will visit the breathtaking coastal outcrops of turbidites, carbonate platforms, fluvial sediments and pillow lavas along the cliffs southeast of Melbourne. Come scramble down craggy slopes at Cape Liptrap to view superb outcrop-scale fold and thrust structures in Devonian turbidites, then take a 5 km hike along the adjacent coast where Cambrian ophiolites and exhumed amphibolites, faulted against trilobite-hosting Ordovician marls and Devonian reefal carbonates will be revealed. This will be followed by a trip to a site of Early Cretaceous fluvial rift sediments deposited during the initial separation of Antarctica from Australia to open the Gippsland Basin.
The Hawkesbury Sandstone is the foundation on which the city of Sydney was built. This trip will allow discussion of the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the Hawkesbury Sandstone by examining outcrops around the scenic Sydney Harbour and in spectacular coastal cliffs in National Parks close to the city. The sandstone displays a wide variety of sedimentary structures combined with superb scenery offering many opportunities for photographers.
Participants will examine illustrative outcrops of thrusts, fault-related folds, stratal architectures and facies of depositional systems affected by growing structures, which are good analogues for hydrocarbon reservoirs. Objectives include interpreting complex thrust structures, identifying and understanding strain and fracture systems in fold-thrust belts, and analyzing patterns of growth strata in areas with synsedimentary folding.
The main part of the field seminar will focus on the description of the fractured carbonates and the extrapolation from the outcrop observations to the subsurface for building geologically plausible reservoir models.
This interdisciplinary, two-day workshop focuses on innovative strategies and new technologies for revitalizing mature fields and includes a series of expert presentations and roundtable discussions. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to advance their understanding of mature fields, to exchange ideas and to explore opportunities for future collaboration. It is organized by the AAPG Latin America & Caribbean Region and the Geological Society of Peru.
This three-day workshop has the primary goal to share knowledge, case studies, techniques and workflows pertaining to the understanding and prediction of hydrocarbon seals for exploration and production in the Middle East. These seals range in age from Pre-Cambrian to Tertiary.
This field trip consists of two days discussing concepts related to structural and stratigraphical seals both in exploration and production scales.
This three-day workshop aims to provide a forum for professionals from industry, academia and government agencies, who are actively involved in the study of Middle Eastern Source Rocks, to share their advances in source rock related fields, present their experiences and challenges, and demonstrate relevant technologies and solutions.
