Understanding the stratigraphic fill and reconstructing the palaeo-hydrology of incised valleys can help to constrain those factors that controlled their origin, evolution and regional significance. This condition is addressed through the analysis of a large (up to 18 km wide by 80 m deep) and exceptionally well-imaged Late Pleistocene incised valley from the Sunda Shelf (South China Sea) based on shallow three-dimensional seismic data from a large (11 500 km2), ‘merge’ survey, supplemented with site survey data (boreholes and seismic).

This approach has enabled the characterization of the planform geometry, cross-sectional area and internal stratigraphic architecture, which together allow reconstruction of the palaeo-hydrology. The valley-fill displays five notable stratigraphic features: (i) it is considerably larger than other seismically resolvable channel forms and can be traced for at least 180 km along its length; (ii) it is located in the axial part of the Malay Basin; (iii) the youngest part of the valley-fill is dominated by a large (600 m wide and 23 m deep), high-sinuosity channel, with well-developed lateral accretion surfaces; (iv) the immediately adjacent interfluves contain much smaller, dendritic channel systems, which resemble tributaries that drained into the larger incised valley system; and (v) a 16 m thick, shell-bearing, Holocene clay caps the valley-fill. The dimension, basin location and palaeohydrology of this incised valley leads to the conclusion that it represents the trunk river, which flowed along the length of the Malay Basin; it connected the Gulf of Thailand in the north with the South China Sea in the south-east. The length of the river system (>1200 km long) enables examination of the upstream to downstream controls on the evolution of the incised valley, including sea-level, climate and tectonics. The valley size, orientation and palaeohydrology suggest close interaction between the regional tectonic framework, low-angle shelf physiography and a humid-tropical climatic setting.

The presentation will be concluded by considering how some of these concepts might be applied to other fluvial systems in SE Asia, including those that form petroleum reservoirs.

The search for unconventional hydrocarbons is not new. It’s true that almost 100 years separated the early exploration successes in the synclinal valleys of Central Pennsylvania, to the exploitation of Coal-Bed Methane in a number of basins in the U.S. and Canada in the 1980’s. Since the 1980's, however, a quiet revolution began which by today has seen several waves of unconventional resources being pursued with economic success. Coal-bed methane was followed by the search for Center-Basin Gas, Shale Gas and most recently, Liquid-rich Shales (some of which aren't shales).

The generation of point bars by lateral accretion during lateral expansion and downstream translation of river meanders is a well described process, and a primary means for generation of sandy bar reservoirs within fluvial strata. Further examination of this process in modern and ancient settings points, however, to a wide variation on this simple theme.

The Mexican Interior Basin formed in early Late Cretaceous time as a narrow retroarc foreland basin developed on recently rifted continental crust of nuclear Mexico. It differs from the contemporary Cordilleran foreland basin to the north, with which it was coextensive, in having a dominant volcanic-lithic component in all of its sandstones.

The New Madid seismic zone (NMSZ) is the second highest risk area for earthquake hazard in the United States. Its fame arises from a cluster of at least three great earthquakes during the winter of 1811/1812 that shook most of the North American continent. During times of past extensive glaciations, the Antarctic ice sheet extended from its current position, reaching across the continental shelf. As the ice sheet retreated to its modern extent, the shrinking ice sheet left behind seawater, rather than ancient ice, leaving behind a sedimentary signature of deglacial history.

The Campanian, Horseshoe Canyon Formation is exposed in three-dimensions along the Red Deer Valley near Drumheller, Alberta. These clastic marginal marine sediments were deposited in mixed-process (wave, tide and fluvial influenced) depositional environments. These deposits are subdivided into six relatively thin (10 m on average; low accommodation) Transgressive-Regressive sequences (A to F). Participants will be able to compare and contrast outcrop observations with wireline and core data and also visualize the seismic expression of the outcrops. These data will be utilized to explain the 3-D evolution of the deposystems through time.

Participants will spend the day hiking in the picturesque badlands of the Natural Preserve in Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They will be accompanied by a Dinosaur expert, Caleb Brown, from the world renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum, and by an experienced sedimentologist from the industry. The Park’s status is due to a combination of its diverse fossil resources, large area of badlands and the cottonwood riparian biozone of the Red Deer River.

Sequence stratigraphy provides a framework for the integration of geological, geophysical, biostratigraphic and engineering data, with the aim of predicting the distribution of reservoir, source rock and seal lithologies. It gives the geoscientist a powerful predictive tool for regional basin analysis, shelf-to-basin correlation, and characterization of reservoir heterogeneity. This course will examine the underlying geological principles, processes and terminology related to sequence stratigraphic interpretation. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn all the aspects related to the understanding and modeling of fractured reservoirs. Attendees will take geologic concepts and use them in reservoir modeling through hands-on sessions devoted to the examination of outcrop, core and log data. They will use that information and a software to create 3D fractured reservoir models. Using actual Teapot Dome (Wyoming, USA) field data from the Tensleep and Niobrara Shale formations and a hands-on approach, the workshop allows the geoscientist to identify fractures and to construct predictive 3D fracture models that can be used to identify productive zones, plan wells and to create fracture porosity and permeability models for reservoir simulation.
