Three outer continental shelf (OCS) oil and gas issues were prominent in 2015 policy debates and will continue in the policy limelight in 2016 as the federal government moves to release final versions of the permits, plans and rules.

The main goal for shale resource characterization is usually the identification of sweet spots, which represent the most favorable drilling targets. Such sweet spots can be identified as those pockets in the target formation that exhibit high total organic carbon (TOC) content, as well as high brittleness. As there is no direct way of computing TOC using seismic data, we adopt indirect ways for doing so.

Everywhere I go and in every conversation I have with AAPG members, sooner or later – and it’s usually sooner– I’m asked what I’m hearing about the duration of this low price cycle. We’ve all heard the old saying that prediction is difficult, especially of the future.

For the oil industry, the most worrisome news coming out of the Middle East doesn’t involve geopolitics. It’s well known by now that Iran wants to increase production by at least 500,000 barrels of oil per day as the lifting of international sanctions allows it to resume crude exports. But Iran isn’t alone.

With Shell abandoning its exploration plans in the Chukchi Sea in September and Statoil following suit in November, many might believe that the North Slope Basin off the northern coast of Alaska has been condemned. Yet those who have put decades into studying the geology of Alaska’s North Slope and Outer Continental Shelf believe the opposite.

In December 2015, the Committee on Offshore Science and Assessment held its inaugural meeting at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The committee, which was established by NAS’s Ocean Studies and Earth Sciences Boards, is sponsored by The Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The primary purpose of this new committee is for NAS to assist BOEM by providing ongoing scientific feedback to most effectively manage the nation’s offshore energy resources in a way that is both environmentally and economically sound.

The idea of nationalizing Venezuela’s oil industry had been in the wind for a few years leading up to 1976, and conditions in the global oil market lent considerable momentum to the popularity of the proposal. Weighed in the balance of 40 years of hindsight, though, nationalization has proven to be nothing short of tragic for the nation’s oil and gas sector.

Sequence stratigraphy provides a framework for the integration of geological, geophysical, biostratigraphic and engineering data, with the aim of predicting the distribution of reservoir, source rock and seal lithologies. It gives the geoscientist a powerful predictive tool for regional basin analysis, shelf-to-basin correlation, and characterization of reservoir heterogeneity. This course will examine the underlying geological principles, processes and terminology related to sequence stratigraphic interpretation. The strength of this course is the application of these basic principles to subsurface datasets in a series of well-founded exercises.

Many factors and processes contribute to imparting an extraordinary complexity to carbonate reservoirs and source rocks. This unique complexity makes exploration and production of the huge petroleum resources hosted in carbonate sequences a very challenging task. This meeting follows the success of the conference held in Naples in April 2014 and aims at bringing together experts of different disciplines from the academia and the oil and gas industry. We invite you to share your experience on new approaches, new tools and new ways of integrating geological and geophysical information that can help in reducing the uncertainties related to the characterization and modeling of carbonate sequences and reservoirs.

Course Focus For Today’s Low Priced Oil Environment

This year a major focus of the course will be how to identify tight oil sand from DSTs to use as candidates for horizontal wells with multi-stage frac’s.  However we also identify better permeability zones which are damaged and can be simply re-entered and re-perfed in a cheaper vertical well. “No need for an expensive horizontal well where a simple vertical well will do the trick”. We also cover using water DSTs to find zones for water disposal wells pertinent today.

Ichnology is the interdisciplinary subject that brings together sedimentologists, paleontologists, stratigraphers, and geochemists to unravel the post-depositional history of sedimentary rocks with respect to the lasting effects that the activities of small animals and plants have on sediment properties and stratification. The subject focuses on trace fossils (sedimentary structures that directly reflect organism activity such as burrows, borings, trails, tracks and fecal pellets), bioturbation (sediment-mixing and disruption of original stratification by burrowers) and bioerosion (excavation and breakdown of hard substrates by boring animals and plants).

Depending on the geological history and structural framework, the spatial distribution of natural fractures may be inhomogeneous and erratic. Statistical approaches involving the extrapolation of limited direct observations often fail to encapsulate the variability within these sub-surface fracture systems. Understanding of the relationship between the shape or strain history of a surface and observed fractures provides predictive strength in areas with limited direct observations.

22-26 August 2016

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn all the aspects related to the understanding and modeling of fractured reservoirs. Attendees will take geologic concepts and use them in reservoir modeling through hands-on sessions devoted to the examination of outcrop, core and log data. They will use that information and a software to create 3D fractured reservoir models. Using actual Teapot Dome (Wyoming, USA) field data from the Tensleep and Niobrara Shale formations and a hands-on approach, the workshop allows the geoscientist to identify fractures and to construct predictive 3D fracture models that can be used to identify productive zones, plan wells and to create fracture porosity and permeability models for reservoir simulation.
