By the time they are drilled, almost all exploratory ventures today will have been geotechnically, statistically and economically analyzed to estimate their ultimate recovery of oil or natural gas, or its EUR, and its present monetary value, or PV, given discovery. This process is generally known as “exploration risk analysis” and it evolved primarily as a response to an endemic problem: explorers were discovering less than half of the EURs they forecast for their investors.

Imagine if Siri or Alexa went to school, got an advanced degree in Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience, then went to work in the oilfield for several years, attended technical conferences, read journals and books; envision the product and the process, and you’d have NESH, the Smart Assistant for oil and gas. In addition, you have a chance to try out NESH and collaborate and explore a customizable artificial intelligence. It’s a tremendous opportunity. Welcome to an interview with Sidd Gupta, founder of NESH.

Bolivia’s role as a South American gas market supplier was a key theme at the Geosciences Technology Workshop Bolivia 2018, AAPG’s first technical workshop in the country. High-profile guests drew national attention, and local media outlets covering the GTW described Bolivia as “playing in the big leagues.”

Deep learning for predicting behaviors is becoming indispensable in the oil industry. Understanding the fundamentals and having a hands-on experience with hacking Python code in order to predict reservoir flow was the experience provided by the first AAPG-Halliburton Hackathon, which took place July 19 in Houston. Led by the AAPG’s Deep Learning Technical Interest Group (TIG) and Halliburton, the event attracted more than 120 registrants who were primarily geoscientists, engineers, and data scientists who worked together in teams that competed against each other and were judged by a panel of experts. The hackathon was powered by the OpenEarth® Community and supported by a team of Halliburton experts in Python software, code, ideation, and strategy – as well as by domain experts and judges from the Deep Learning TIG.

Having relevant petrophysical information is vital for successful drilling, completion, and stimulation. However, it has not been easy to find ways to obtain reliable information. Welcome to an interview with Don Herman, who discusses a new tool that logs deviated, horizontal, and vertical wells where wireline could not reach TD. Cordax will be presenting at U-Pitch at URTeC.

Plays that have the capacity to be company-makers often rely on new technologies. Nowhere is this more true today than in the Haynesville Shale, where the application of new techniques has revived a once moribund play. The Haynesville Shale is one of the hottest plays in the U.S. Gulf Coast, and an upcoming AAPG Playmaker Forum will gather experts to discuss how and why.
