We all have milestones in our lives – those times that, in retrospect, we recognize as formative or transitionary, in which one chapter of our lives ends and another begins.

Last year, the extraordinarily high quality of the technical program was the talk of the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition in Calgary, and this was at an ACE with plenty of high points to talk about. The technical program for the 2017 ACE in Houston promises to be even better than last year’s.

The first installment of our new monthly feature celebrating “The Next 100 Years” of AAPG examines our global energy future. The world of the future will need energy that is affordable, available, reliable and sustainable. But no form of energy is perfect and the availability and use of resources – from fossil to nuclear to renewable – vary by region.

Demand will flatten and peak. But consider how much oil must be found and produced simply to maintain a demand growth rate of zero percent.

Led by De Ville Wickens, PhD

Participants of this field excursion will be visiting one of the world's best examples of an ancient basin floor to slope fan complex associated with a fluvial-dominated deltaic system in the Karoo. Basin.

The Karoo basin hosts an inexhaustible amount of information on deepwater and deltaic sedimentation with present day erosion allowing 3D-viewing of laterally continuous (tens of kilometres) outcrops. The objective of this field trip is to attempt a better understanding of the basic depositional processes and facies development of deep-water sedimentation and the implications thereof for reservoir heterogeneity, lateral and vertical bed continuity and resulting reservoir architecture and quality. This two-day field trip will focus on show-casing the Whitehill and Dwyka formation, which are main targets for shale gas development in South Africa.
