The AAPG Women’s Network and the SEPM student community co-hosted a panel discussion in October with AAPG Executive Committee officers. While we addressed many of the audience’s questions during the event, we ran out of time before answering all of the important submitted questions. The panelists decided to share responses with the greater AAPG community through the EXPLORER.

Researchers generally say they are scrambling to keep up with the changing needs of the oil industry combined with the emerging, broader concerns of society. Amazingly, technology research for oil and gas continues to flourish even now, despite some recent problematic headwinds. And even though computing-related technology gets most of the attention these days, today’s energy research extends far beyond Big Data and its applications.

As companies work toward developing alternative sources for a world with ever-increasing energy demands, energy minerals are moving to the forefront of the conversation. AAPG’s Energy Minerals Division finds itself in the spotlight these days for its work in prospecting alternative energy sources, such as geothermal and hydrates, for commercial use. “We’ve got good momentum right now with interest in alternative energy,” said Ursula Hammes, AAPG Member, EMD president and president at Hammes Energy and Consultants.

One of the cooler energy projects in development today addresses CO₂, methane, climate change and clean fuels, all at the same time. That’s “cooler” in the sense of using less heat, as well as being highly innovative in combining natural gas and carbon dioxide to generate fuel. The gas-to-liquids process is a research project of GTI in metropolitan Chicago, where it’s known as Cool GTL.

The month of July 2020 was indeed an eventful one on AAPG’s calendar, as various divisions and regions of our great Association underwent changes in leadership. The young professionals arm of AAPG Africa Region was not left behind, as the baton of leadership was passed to Philip Ajaebili, ably supported by AAPG Africa Region Program Manager Delia Kuye, AAPG Middle East and Africa Region Director Abeer Zubaidi and a team of dedicated YP representatives in several African countries to build on the great efforts of past leaders and YP representatives in the region.

Associations exist to serve their members, and AAPG is no exception. Those of us who have the privilege of holding leadership positions in our Association have the responsibility to listen and respond to members’ comments and concerns. I am writing address questions that our leadership team has received about why we ask presenters and committee members to pay a registration fee to participate in virtual events that they support with their time and expertise.

In the business of oil and gas exploration, it’s all about managing risk. Companies are more likely to drill where there are strong indications of hydrocarbons from field and seismic data, nearby wells and discoveries – and preferably, all of the above. So, when the federal government officially opens the doors in the near future to the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for commercial drilling, it could be like watching a game of poker.

As I am writing this column, AAPG has just completed its first fully virtual annual meeting – ACE 2020. By most accounts it was very successful. The technical program committee provided a great slate of talks, posters and core studies. The staff placed it on a platform that was easy and fun to use. The whole meeting was a unique virtual experience.

Do super basins have a role in sustainable development? The short answer is, Yes. Super basins can be part of a sustainable energy and environmental future for the planet. A more complex answer is: It depends on how you define “sustainable.” In the view of the oil and gas industry, sustainability has an economic component and an environmental component. Hydrocarbon-based energy is essential for a sustainable world economy in that view, and it will be for a long time to come.

Workshop
Netherlands
Tuesday, 9 March Wednesday, 10 March 2021, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

The workshop will offer an open forum to integrate two geo-energy communities where technical, environmental, social and business aspects associated with geo-energy exploration, development and production activities will be presented and discussed. The workshop will evolve around a two day program where on the first day a series of key-notes on all themes will provide the basis for in depth discussions, and where on the second day the community will share their knowledge and experiences through presentations and posters to explore the synergies in smaller groups. All with the purpose of coming to a final take-away: which opportunities should be redeemed, which synergies should be nurtured and which bridges are still to be build?

This is a less-technical education topic. It can be condensed to an hour or given as 2 two-hour sessions. It stresses selected controversial aspects of fracking that touch some combination of environment and economics and includes a short video of how fracking is done.
