September is annual meeting month for four AAPG Sections:

Next month we'll provide details of the Rocky Mountain and GCAGS meetings -- but for now, the spotlight is turned on the month's earlier gatherings.

Mid-Continent Section Meeting

The Cox Business Services Convention Center in Oklahoma City will be the site of this year's Mid-Continent meeting, built around the theme "Target the Hidden Potential in the West."

Technical sessions will run on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 12-13. Other activities will include:

  • Pre-meeting field trips to the Arkoma/Ouachita Jackfork and Cement oil fields on Sept. 8-9.
  • The opening session at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, followed by the Icebreaker reception in the exhibits hall.
  • The All-Convention Luncheon on Monday, Sept. 12, featuring Aubrey McClendon.
  • A dinner and social gathering, also on Monday, featuring humorist Argus Hamilton.
  • The DPA Luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 13, featuring Roy Long of the Department of Energy.

Eastern Section Meeting

The Radisson Hotel in Morgantown, W.Va., located in the Wharf District, is the site of the 34th annual Eastern Section meeting, built around the theme "Mountains of Opportunity."

The varied technical program will include sessions on:

  • Petroleum Systems of the Appalachian Basin.
  • Trenton-Black River.
  • Coalbed Methane.
  • Environmental Technologies.
  • CO2 Sequestration.

The meeting also will feature a first-of-its-kind technical session offering presentations by AAPG Executive Committee members and all three Division presidents.

Two pre-meeting field trips and a Well Log Analysis workshop will be offered, as is a post-meeting workshop on 3-D Reservoir Characterization and Modeling. The opening session's keynote address will be by Galey Memorial Award winner Robert Milici, of the U.S. Geological Survey.
