AAPG's Distinguished Lecture program, an integral part of the association's global
outreach effort, will offer its most ambitious slate ever for the
2002-2003 season.
The program, funded by the AAPG Foundation, will
offer 15 speakers — nine domestic and six international — the
largest number of speakers ever assembled for one season.
The season is ambitious in another way: It marks
the first time an AAPG-SPE intersociety lecturer is included in
the list. Also included will be an AAPG-SEG intersociety lecturer,
the continuation of the cooperative program.
Presenting the inaugural AAPG-SPE Joint Distinguished
Lecture will be Dennis Beliveau, vice president of business
development for Epic Consulting Services in Calgary, Canada. His
lecture will be "Reservoir Heterogeneity, Geostatistics, Horizontal
Wells and Black Jack Poker."
The AAPG-SEG lecture — the fourth in the series
— will be given by Jerry M. Harris, professor and chairman
of the department of geophysics at Stanford University, Stanford,
Calif. His lecture will be "Crosswell Seismic Profiling: The Decade
Ahead."
AAPG's Distinguished Lecture program was developed
to expose students, young geologists, college faculty members and
members of geological societies to current information, research
and thinking.
Incomplete records show that last year's 14 lecturers
spoke to a record 10,718 people on 120 domestic and 65 international
visits. (The numbers do not include William Galloway's August tour
of China and Southeast Asia.)
As in past years, support for several tours comes
directly from the AAPG Foundation's Distinguished Lecture Fund.
They are:
The Allan P. Bennison Distinguished Lecturer — An international
lecturer, provided by contributions from longtime Tulsa geologist
Allan Bennison, who now resides in Glass Valley, Calif.
The Bennison lecturer this year will be Lidia
Lonergan, Royal Society University Reserach Fellow and Lecturer
at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London,
UK. Her lecture will be "Sand Remobilization and Injection in Deepwater
Systems: Implications for Enhanced Reservoir Production."
The J. Ben Carsey Distinguished Lecturer — provided by contributions
from J. Ben Carsey Jr., of Houston, to establish a named lecturer
in memory of his father, who served as president of AAPG in 1967-68.
This year's J. Ben Carsey lecturer is Emery D.
Goodman, project manager, eastern Gulf of Mexico exploration,
ExxonMobil Exploration, Houston. His topic will be "Genetic Approach
to Understanding a Complex Hydrocarbon System: Caribbean Colossus
of East Venezuela."
The Haas-Pratt Distinguished Lecturer — provided by contributions
from the late Merrill W. Haas, in honor of famed geologist Wallace
Pratt (Haas' mentor), and granted for emphasis on a specific case
history application of geology in a discovery.
The Haas-Pratt lecture will be presented this year
by John B. Anderson, Maurice Ewing Professor of Oceanography,
Rice University, Houston. His topics are:
- "Variations in Late Quaternary Stratigraphic Architecture in
the Northern Gulf of Mexico: Generating Stratigraphic Models from
Case Studies."
- "Antarctica's Contribution to Eustacy."
The Roy M. Huffington Distinguished Lecturer — provided
by contributions from the Huffington family in honor of the oilman-geologist.
The Huffington lectures this year will be presented
by Charles F. Kluth, Denver consultant formerly with ChevronTexaco,
San Ramon, Calif., who will be speaking on a Latin America tour.
His topic will be "Fun With Dip! The Predictive Use of Dip Data
to Improve the Interpretation of Fold Traps."
The Dean A. McGee International Distinguished Lecturer —
provided by contributions from Kerr-McGee, which annually supports
international speaking tours.
This year's McGee lecturer is Timothy Garfield,
stratigraphy advisor, ExxonMobil Upstream Geoscience, Houston. He
will be speaking on a tour of western Europe, offering the topic
"Sequence Stratigraphy and Facies Architecture of Deepwater Reservoirs:
New Data, Tools and Concepts."
This year's list of domestic
Distinguished Lecturers also includes:
Thomas S. Ahlbrandt, world energy project chief for the U.S.
Geological Survey, Denver. His topic is "Assessment of Global Oil,
Gas and NGL Resources Based on the Total Petroleum System Concept."
John Delaney, professor, school of oceanography, University
of Washington, Seattle. His three topics are:
- "Anatomy of a Submarine Hydrothermal Field."
- "Neptune: A Submarine Network of Interactive Laboratories at
the Scale of a Tectonic Plate — A New Paradigm in Ocean and Earth
Sciences."
- "Volcanoes, Oceans, and Life in Our Solar System."
G. Michael Grammer, associate professor of geology, Western
Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich. (formerly with ChevronTexaco,
Houston). His two topics are:
- "Predicting the Distribution and Geometry of Platform Carbonate
Reservoirs — Insights from the Integration of Modern and Outcrop
Analogs."
- "Using Comparative Sedimentology to Unravel the Dynamics of
Carbonate Systems — Lessons Learned and Future Directions."
Cindy A. Yeilding, exploration, operations, development and
production geologist, BP, Houston. Her topic will be "The History
of a New Play: Thunder Horse Discovery, Deepwater Gulf of Mexico."
This year's international
Distinguished Lecturers also include:
John Kaldi, director, National Centre of Petroleum Geology
and Geophysics, University of Adelaide University, Adelaide, Australia.
His tour will visit groups in India, Asia and Indonesia,
and he will be offering four topics:
- "Evaluating Seal Potential of Top and Intraformational Seals."
- "Rocks, Holes and the Fire Brigade: Understanding the Pore
Geometry of Reservoir Rocks."
- "Seals and Leaks in Dynamic Petroleum Systems: The East Java
Sea, Indonesia and the Timor Sea, Australia." (co-authored with
Geoffrey W. O'Brien and Tomasz Kivior, National Centre Petroleum
Geology and Geophysics, Adelaide.)
- "Upstream of Upstream: Preparing Professionals for the Petroleum
Industry."
Gordon Knox, consultant, Balzan, Malta. His tour will visit
groups in Australia, Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and he will be
offering two topics:
- "Subsurface Risk and Uncertainty Assessment in Petroleum Exploration
— The Challenges."
- "Ways of Working and Organization in Exploration."
Rick Sarg, stratigraphy coordinator, ExxonMobil Exploration,
Houston. He will tour the Middle East, and offer three topics:
- "Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy — Future Directions for Exploration
and Development."
- "Predictability of the Stratigraphic Record from the Outcrop
to Multiple Seismic Attributes — Past, Present and Future."
- "Sequence Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Economic Importance
of Evaporites and Evaporite-Carbonate Transitions."
A.M. Celal Sengor, Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey,
who will tour Central Asia and Europe. He will offer two topics:
- "Tectonic Evolution of the Altaids and Continental Evolution
in Asia in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic."
- "Tectonic Evolution of the Tehysides."
