AAPG Education Conference Starts Feb. 14 in Houston

Energy industry companies and geoscience college students are invited to participate in the fifth annual AAPG/SEG Spring Student Expo, set March 10-12 at the Sarkeys Energy Center at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

The spring event -- modeled after AAPG's successful fall Student Expo at Rice University in Houston -- is designed to bring together geoscience students interested in energy careers and energy industry representatives seeking qualified summer interns and full-time employees.

This year's Expo will again feature formal interviews with energy industry representatives, a poster contest for students (with cash prizes), company exhibits and numerous network opportunities.

Also slated is a March 11 field trip to the Wichita Mountains, plus two mini-courses.

Energy industry companies and geoscience college students are invited to participate in the fifth annual AAPG/SEG Spring Student Expo, set March 10-12 at the Sarkeys Energy Center at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

This year's Expo will again feature formal interviews with energy industry representatives, a poster contest for students (with cash prizes), company exhibits and numerous network opportunities.

Also slated is a March 11 field trip to the Wichita Mountains, plus two mini-courses.

Students who choose to showcase their work in poster format via the Scientific Poster Contest will this year be competing for cash prizes for the top three geology and geophysics posters. Prizes will be $500 (first place), $250 (second place) and $100 (third place).

Abstracts are due by Feb. 20 and should be sent to Donna Mullins at [email protected].

Student and company registration information is available on the AAPG Web site, or by contacting Carol Drayton at [email protected].

Winter Education Conference, which includes 11 different courses over five days, will be held Feb. 14-18 in Houston.

The conference's concept is one-stop, a la carte shopping for a variety of education opportunities, all in one place at one time.

Four concurrent sessions will be going on each day -- and the start/stop times for the courses are staggered throughout the week so attendees can attend from two to four courses, depending on their interest and training needs. The courses range from one to three days in length.

The full-week registration fee is $1,095 for AAPG members ($1,195 for non-members), but courses also are priced individually for those that prefer the "a la carte" option.

This year's courses are:

  • Giant Oil & Gas Fields: Global Inventories, Tectonic Settings, Stratigraphic Framework and Predictive Parameters, taught by Paul Mann and Mike Horn -- Feb. 14-15.
  • Well Log Analysis, taught by Dan Krygowski -- Feb. 14-15.
  • Practical Salt Tectonics, taught by Mark Rowan -- Feb. 14-16.
  • Risk Analysis for Development Applications, taught by Jim Gouveia and Mark McLane -- Feb. 14-16.
  • Essentials of Subsurface Mapping, taught by Dick Banks -- Feb. 15.
  • Log Analysis of Shaly Sands, taught by George Asquith -- Feb. 15.
  • Tight Gas Sands, taught by Alan Byrnes -- Feb. 17-18.
  • Assessment, Classification and Reporting of Reserves, taught by Rawdon Seager and Menno Dinkelman -- Feb. 17-18.
  • Reservoir Engineering-Characterization for Geologists, taught by Rich Green and Bill Kazmann -- Feb. 17-18.
  • Understanding Complex Permeability in Carbonate Rocks, taught by Jerry Lucia -- Feb. 17.
  • Geochemical Exploration for Oil and Gas: Strategies for Success, taught by Deet Schumacher -- Feb. 18.

In addition to the courses, a small AAPG Bookstore will be set up to give attendees the opportunity to purchase AAPG books and maps. A welcoming icebreaker is included on the first evening to encourage networking among the attendees from all the courses.
