Resources and Reserves Committee Chairman's Report

American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

The DPA Resources and Reserves Committee continues to work closely with JCORET (The Joint Committee on Reserves Evaluator Training). As you may know the committee consists of 3 members from each of the following societies (AAPG, SPE, SPEE, WPC). The AAPG representation on JCORET is Dan Tearpock, John Coleman and Samuel Miciotto. Mr. Bill Kazmann recently rolled off the committee.

The purpose of JCORET is to meet a recognized need for high quality, industry recognized, training from individuals responsible for petroleum reserves and resources evaluation. There are three primary areas of focus: a) reserves and resources definitions; b) recommended geological and engineering practices; and 3) ethics training. JCORET members approve course materials submitted by course authors/instructors to be consistent with JCORET requirements for such reserves or resources training.

JCORET now has an active website. The JCORET website is www.JCORET.org/. The website is being hosted by the SPE. There is a link to the website on the DPA website homepage. Please take a few minutes to review the site. The website has information for authors seeing course approval from JCORET, as well as information for geoscientists and engineers interested in identifying JCORET approved courses.

JCORET is constantly soliciting additional "targeted" courses on reserves and resources. If you, as a DPA member, have recently attended a course that might be applicable for JCORET review and approval, please . John is the Chair of the JCORET Curriculum Committee.

Recently, the SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists) inquired with JCORET in regard to joining the committee. The SEG is considering acceptance of PRMS. The SEG has its own reserves committee and from what I understand it sees the adoption of PRMS as an opportunity to broaden its focus from strictly exploration to include reserves. Mr. Bruce Shang (Marathon) from the SEG attended the last JCORET meeting held on August 9, 2010.
