Energy Industry Profile of a new ISO for GIS

The following was brought to my attention by Ron Hart, the manager of the AAPG/Datapages. This is a call to action to the GIS users in our area.AAPG/Datapages has been participating in the EIP to create a new ISO standard for the structure of metadata in GIS files. Standardization of metadata structure is important for our future because it will enable web-based search indexes to locate and log mapping files available to the public. It will not matter whether the files are open access (they are free) or have user fees associated (they are for sale by private publishers), the important thing is we will be able to know that map information exists and where to get it.

The EIP has been designed to facilitate discovery and assessment of distributed information resources, both structured and unstructured, digital and physical. As such, audience response is invited from GIS users interested in the fact that the EIP is being developed, and who plan to actually implement it. This may include geologists, geotechs, GIS techs, database managers, database administrators, etc.

Comments are invited from persons who are acquainted with GIS metadata. All comments are needed by October 12, 2011.

Energy Industry Profile of ISO/DIS 19115-1 v1.0Release Candidate is Available for Public Review

The Energy Industry Profile of ISO/DIS 19115-1 v1.0 Release Candidate (EIP) is now available for community review and comment. The EIP is a metadata standard designed to enable the discovery, evaluation and retrieval of distributed information resources, including datasets and documents, as well as physical resources. A review packet available for download from Energistics’ website includes the EIP specification document (125 pp.), a ReadMe presentation (36 slides), and a Comment Form.

Two webinars will be offered as orientation to the EIP and feedback process on September 13 and September 19 (encore). Registration via the Energistics website is required; webinar access details will be sent to registered participants in advance of the meetings.

All comments constituting feedback about the EIP must be submitted by October 12, 2011, as instructed on the website and in the EIP review packet.

Energistics’ Energy Industry Metadata Work Group expects to finalize and publish EIP v1.0 in December 2011.
