To encourage the projects on sustainable development in the energy field, the AAPG Latin America & Caribbean Region (LACR) announces a contest for AAPG students and Young Professionals (YP) who are studying or working in the Latin America and Caribbean region.  

The contest aims to promote the development of science and technology in the energy field focusing on sustainable development and highlighting social, environmental and economic impact. Additionally, the contest’s purpose is to encourage the growth of comprehensive ventures to disseminate current advances for the future.

Contest Description and Guidelines

The contest solicits proposals for projects promoting innovative initiatives related to the extraction, processing, consumption and/or disposal components of the energy chain. There are no restrictions about the industry/primary resource to work with – it could be for oil, wind, hydroelectrical, biomass, nuclear, critical minerals and any other related energy or any services that have an impact on sustainable development objectives.

The contest is open to undergraduate, graduate students and young professionals with less than two years of professional experience. All participants must be members of an AAPG student chapter or young professional chapter, without restriction regarding the date of their affiliation with the AAPG, as long as it is prior to the submission of the proposal. Participants may submit projects individually or in groups of up to six people.

Projects may be part of any academic training activity, academic research, lectures or graduate work (thesis or degree projects). Proposals may be presented with or without support from faculty and/or representatives of the private sector/industry.

The deadline for proposals is 31 March 2020.

Awards and Prizes

The prize must be fully destined to develop the project proposed for the competition and may cover all or part of the cost of the project. The winning projects must be implemented within one year following the award.

Winning project awards include:

• First Prize (sponsored by the Colombian Association of Petroleum Geologists and Geophysicists, ACGGP)
• US $2,000 to be invested in the proposed project.
• AAPG certificate for each team member.
• Special publication in one of the digital AAPG magazine and/or AAPG LACR blog.
• Special invitation to present the project at one of the AAPG LACR events related to energy.

• Second Prize (Sponsored by NEOIL Exploration, Geology, Geophysics and Energy)
• US $1,000 to be invested in the proposed project.
• AAPG certificate for each team member.
• Special publication in one of the digital AAPG magazine and/or AAPG LACR blog.

• Third Prize (sponsored by Rock Whisperer, LLC)
• US $500 to be invested in the proposed project
• AAPG certificate for each team member.
• Special publication in the digital AAPG magazine and/or AAPG LACR blog.

• Special recognition: projects with high scores will receive recognition consisting of:
• AAPG certificate for each team member.
• Special publication in the digital AAPG magazine and/or AAPG LACR blog.
