Interview with Shipeng Fu, Knowledgette. Innovators in Training Series.

In the fast-paced world of technological innovations, training often has a hard time keeping up. In addition, the geoscientists and engineers who need to update their knowledge and skills are best served by on-demand micro-learning, which is both engaging and effective. Welcome to an interview with Shipeng Fu, Knowledgette, who has envisioned a training platform as well as content for on-demand micro-training, and which is free for AAPG members.

What is your name and your background?

My name is Shipeng Fu and I am the founder and CEO of Knowledgette. I currently serve on the board of SPE Golden Gate Section and have a PhD in fluid mechanics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Prior to founding Knowledgette, I worked for both major and start-up oil companies. I often found that the traditional training courses I took in my various roles were not only time-consuming, but generically designed. In some cases, I would sit through a weeklong training class just to get what I needed from the content presented in one single afternoon! The traditional class model could not individualize teaching based on what I – or my fellow participants – needed, given our different background knowledge and learning goals. The frustration from these experiences is what really drove me to start Knowledgette and create a new learning platform specifically for oil and gas professionals to get the information and knowledge they need in an accessible, affordable, engaging way. Read my story on founding Knowledgette.

What is Knowledgette?

nowledgette is an e-learning platform specialized for professionals in oil and gas industry. We offer short- and micro-length video lectures that professionals can access anytime, anywhere to advance on and off the job learning. Courses are taught by leading industry professionals and we specifically design our short videos to help your brain absorb the information and even include dynamic annotation and animation to help keep you engaged throughout your learning. Visit our site.

What is the educational philosophy behind Knowledgette?

We offer individualized and affordable learning for students and professionals in the oil and gas industry.

Our core philosophy is based on the understanding that each person accessing our platform has unique background knowledge and professional goals, and therefore different learning needs. That’s why we segment traditional day- or week-long professional courses into short video lectures accessible online, anytime. This enables professionals to start at the most appropriate point in a lecture for themselves, follow an individualized path through the topics they need, and conduct their training in small bites at the most relevant and convenient time given their schedule.Read more about knowledgette.

What are some of the topics covered?

The main topics covered in many of the Knowledette lectures available today include Geoscience, Petroleum Engineering, Geostatistics, Petrophysics, Unconventional, and Career Development. The great thing about our platform is that we are always adding new courses and topics that meet the needs of professionals throughout the oil and gas industry, so the main topics you might find a year from now could be totally different!

Beyond just the main topics covered, I also want to highlight that our courses also include different learning levels, including those that cover the basics, those that address industry gaps between school and job, and those that help close professional experience gaps. Check out our forever-growing course library.

How can AAPG members benefit from them?

All AAPG members have free access to video lectures from both AAPG and SPWLA (Society of Petrophysicists and Well Logging Analysts) through Knowledgette. All AAPG members can get started today by logging into Knowledgette via this designated private portal.

AAPG and SPWLA (Society of Petrophysicists and Well Logging Analysts) are both partners of Knowledgette and we will continue to build on the free courses offered to members over time.

What are your plans for the future?

We not only want to build an affordable learning platform at Knowledgette, but also an accessible tool to help professionals in the oil and gas industry solve problems on the job. Today and going forward, we are also working to ensure that all members of Knowledgette feel that they are part of a real community for professionals from different disciplines and places, and can connect and learn from them through the platform. These connections and the unique value of our courses is something I’m truly passionate about continuing to grow.
