The Petroleum Geochemistry Toolkit for Petroleum Exploration and Development

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

This course will provide the geologist, geophysicist, and engineer with sufficient background to better understand the basic principles of petroleum geochemistry, how best to use geochemistry in their exploration or production program, types of samples and analysis required to evaluate a basin/region, integration with other datasets, and better understand the geochemical data and interpretation as well as limitations. The goal is not to make the students into petroleum geochemists but provide them with the basic tools to be able to ask the right questions and understand the results to better evaluate charge risk. The instructor for this course is Michael Abrams, visiting professor Imperial College London.

Key topics to be discussed include:
  • Petroleum and its products
  • Molecular characterization of oils
  • School exercise 1: Organic facies and maturity evaluation of selected oils
  • Molecular characterization of gases
  • School exercise 2: Organic facies and maturity evaluation of selected gases
  • Source rock evaluation
  • School exercise 3: Source rock evaluation of rock samples
  • Reservoir geochemistry
  • Surface geochemistry
  • Developing a geochemistry program
  • Basin/maturity modeling
  • Primary and secondary migration
  • Play charge analysis
