An AAPG Fall Education Conference Course

Concepts, Models, and Case Studies of Dolomitization – With Applications to Hydrocarbon Exploration And Development

Published
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

Despite intensive research, the origin of dolomite remains subject to considerable controversy. This is partly because some of the chemical and hydrological conditions of dolomite formations are poorly understood. This course instructed by, Hans G. Machel (University of Alberta) and Jay M. Gregg (Oklahoma State University), will help to provide participants with an overview of dolomite research and highlight its major advances and controversies in recent years. This will be done by revisiting specific case studies and implementing newly developed concepts and models. The course is part of the 2014 Fall Education Conference and will betaking place Monday November 10th-Tuesday 11th at the Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas.

Course Details

Event: Fall Education Conference
Presentation: Concepts, Models, and Case Studies of Dolomitization – With Applications to Hydrocarbon Exploration And Development
Instructor(s): Hans G. Machel and Jay M. Gregg
Date: November 10th-11th, 2014 (Monday & Tuesday)
Location: Norris Conference Center-CityCentre in Houston, Texas
Content: 1.5 CEU
Limit: 50 people

Who Should Attend

Petroleum geologists who work in any type of carbonate hydrocarbon reservoir, especially those in working in dolomitizedreservoirs.

Objectives
Attendees in this course will gain an understanding of:

  1. what creates dolomite in various geologic settings
  2. the sizes and shapes that dolomitized reservoir bodies can attain
  3. how and how much porosity and permeability can change via dolomitization.

Course Content

This course summarizes the major advances and current controversies in dolomite research. A major part of this course deals with the various dolomitization models, from early to late and from shallow to deep, from hypersaline reflux to hydrothermal dolomitization and MVT mineralization. These concepts will be applied to hydrocarbon exploration and development. Material will be presented through a combination of lectures, case studies and class exercises.

Topics Include

  • Geochemical Constraints on Dolomitization
  • Textures
  • Petrophysics (porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, wire line logs)
  • Natural Environments and Models
  • Geochemical methods (trace elements, isotopes, fluid inclusions)
  • Case Studies

2014 Fall Education Conference

The three concurrent sessions allow attendees to mix and match courses according to their interests and training needs. Courses for the conference may be purchased individually. These individual prices are reflected in the pricing on the course descriptions.

Course notes will be provided in digital format on USB flash drive only, so electronic devices with a USB port are required for all courses. If you do not have access to an electronic device with a USB port, please contact the AAPG Education Dept. for an alternate method to download the digital course notes.
