“The Ocean on the Top of Our Mountain” is an animated movie telling the story of the Indian subcontinent’s epic tectonic journey northwards to form the Himalaya in a way that is accessible to children whose reading skills in their native language are commonly challenged. The AAPG Foundation, along with partners including APG-India, the Paleontological Society, UNESCO and the Geological Society of America, has generously provided funding to make the movie that has now moved full gear into production thanks primarily to the Foundation’s generosity. The movie features interactions between a village girl called Nushrat and Gutishuti, an enrolled trilobite collected at the top of the Himalaya who becomes reanimated in Nushrat’s warm hand. It will be produced in Bengali language by Drishtikon Arthouse with a target audience of 240 million native speakers and will be made freely available on the internet.

Follow the updates in coming editions of the EXPLORER as we bring these characters to life through pre-production and into the production and post-production phases! For a taste of what’s to come, here are a few views of the development of the main human character, Nushrat.
