As the oil and gas industry emerges out of the downturn, and the world energy is at balance today between supply and demand, shale gas plays have become much more resilient and efficient in delivering unprecedented expectations of hydrocarbon supply. The shale gas producers and operators experienced the great challenge of lowering the cost of drilling and fracturing through process optimization. The productivity of these formations continues to surprise the industry with its performance and sustainability of hydrocarbon production. Lowering the cost of production through innovative technologies and efficiency has validated the economic viability of shale gas plays.
Recent exploration activities in Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and China by various operators went through a steep learning curve which has benefited these new players in examining all aspects of these plays. Understanding these tight reservoirs requires detailed study and analysis of the subsurface to guide exploration trends, and identify sweet spots, where basin simulation and modeling are considered critical in understanding the origin of hydrocarbon and historical maturity. Comprehensive analysis of geophysical data, drilling measurements, formation evaluation, core analysis, testing, production and geomechanics is also essential. The thermodynamic of gas flow in these ultra-low permeability formations are still being investigated by scientists and researchers in the industry and academia. Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning will accelerate this learning curve and provide these operators with an opportunity to improved well placement and economic productivity.
This symposium is planned and organized by two international professional societies that best understand such resources: the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The symposium will attract world experts in exploration, characterization, drilling, fracturing and completion. Best practices and case studies of what the industry has learned on shale gas exploitation in the last few years will be presented and discussed so the attendees can greatly benefit from the exchange of knowledge and expertise of the contributors. Technical Poster presenters will also be invited to share their findings with the participants.
Date: Tuesday 11th December Time: 6.30 pm – 8.30pm Keynote Speaker: Pasquale (PV) Scaturro, President/Geophysicist, Exploration Specialists Solitaire, Namibia
In 2003-2004 Geophysicist PV Scaturro organized and led the historic 114-day journey down the entire length of the Blue Nile and Nile Rivers, a distance of 3,260 miles (5,250 kms). The Nile First Descent Expedition was the first ever descent of the Blue Nile and Nile River from its source high in the mountains of Ethiopia to the Mediterranean Sea. The historical expedition is featured in the award winning IMAX film Mystery of the Nile, the third highest grossing large format film in history. The expedition had to overcome enormous hurdles - suicidal rapids, crocodile attacks, malaria, severe sandstorms, gunfire from bandits and arrests by local militia. For over a hundred years explorers had attempted to descend the Blue Nile, but none had succeeded.
Pasquale (PV) Scaturro is a geologist and geophysicist with 38 years of experience in worldwide oil and gas exploration and development. Pasquale started his career with Amoco Production Company before holding a series of positions with McMoRan Oil and Gas, Seismic Specialists, Tricon Geophysics, Frontera Resources and Hydrocarb Energy Corporation. He has explored for oil and gas in North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.
Pasquale has led major and historical expeditions in high altitude mountaineering including three expeditions to Everest. In 2001 he conceived, organized, and led the National Federation of the Blind 2001 Everest Expedition, in which blind climber Erik Weihenmayer reached the summit. Time Magazine called it one of the most successful Mt. Everest expeditions in history. Pasquale has also led multiple descents of major world-class rivers including the Bio Bio in Chile, Omo and Zambezi in Africa. He has appeared on the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, ESPN, Turner Television, the History Channel, National Public Radio, MacGillivray Freeman Films and IMAX Theaters worldwide, A&E, MSNBC and MSN and has been featured in Time Magazine, Outside Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Playboy Magazine, the LA Times and many more.
