The Sinú-San Jacinto Basin is a very promising petroleum basin in Colombian offshore and onshore. This fieldtrip has the potential of encouraging exploration activities in the region and trigger collaboration projects between industry and academia. The fieldtrip has the potential to gather people from different institutions and companies who might be able to identify problems and discuss potential solutions. This could be the inception of collaboration projects that will enhance the geological knowledge of the Sinú-San Jacinto Basin.

The main objective of this field trip is to identify the main outcropping lithologies and structures in the northern part of the Sinú-San Jacinto onshore basin.

Work Plan
Tubará

Barranquilla - Tubará - Juan de Acosta - Boca Tocino Beach - Totumo Volcano - Galerazamba: Structural styles and depositional environments of Cenozoic rocks

What to Bring

About Barranquilla

The City of Barranquilla is a vibrant, cosmopolitan, industrial city located in the northern Caribbean Coast region of Colombia.  With a population of approximately 2 million, Barranquilla is the region’s largest city and is Colombia's fourth most populous city, following Bogotá, Medellín and Cali.

Located at the intersection of the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea, the Barranquilla enjoys both river and sea cultures, as well as a warm weather all year long.

Barranquilla also has one of Colombia’s most important ports, and its nickname, “the Golden Gate of Colombia” reflects its 19th Century history as the primary point of entry for passengers and goods coming into the country.

In addition to serving as capital of the Atlántico department, Barranquilla serves as an important cultural hub. The city’s El Prado neighborhood is known  for its Republican-era architecture, and the entire city is home to numerous museums, beaches, and festivals. The Carnival of Barranquilla is the most important folkloric and cultural festival in Colombia and  designated as Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
