The Sinú-San Jacinto Basin is a very promising petroleum basin in Colombian offshore and onshore. This fieldtrip has the potential of encouraging exploration activities in the region and trigger collaboration projects between industry and academia. The fieldtrip has the potential to gather people from different institutions and companies who might be able to identify problems and discuss potential solutions. This could be the inception of collaboration projects that will enhance the geological knowledge of the Sinú-San Jacinto Basin.

The main objective of this field trip is to identify the main outcropping lithologies and structures in the northern part of the Sinú-San Jacinto onshore basin.

Work Plan

Barranquilla - Tubará - Juan de Acosta - Boca Tocino Beach - Totumo Volcano - Galerazamba: Structural styles and depositional environments of Cenozoic rocks

What to Bring

The field trip fee includes transportation, refreshment, lunch, and field guide. Participants may bring cash (in pesos) to purchase additional snacks, souvenirs and to pay the admission to the Totumo mud volcano (if times allow it).

Participants should bring hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent as well as comfortable walking shoes. Those who plan to take a bath in the mud volcano should bring an old bathing suit, towel and sandals.

The average temperature in Turabá and Totumo is approximately 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Faranheit), with an average humidity of 64 percent and UV index of 5.

Recent Discoveries, Exploration Opportunities and Sustainable Development Strategies in Caribbean Basins will be held in-person only in Barranquilla, Colombia.

GTW Caribbean will be held at the Dann Carlton Hotel and Convention Center, located in the northern part of Barranquilla, across the street from the Buenavista shopping center and with easy access to a variety of restaurants and bars.

The hotel as 178 guest rooms and 13 modern meeting rooms. Guests enjoy access to two restaurants (El Oasis and El Giratorio), the El Velero Lobby Bar as well as to the facility’s gym, spa, business center and private parking area.
