Jorge Calvache
Vice President of Exploration, Ecopetrol S.A.
Jorge is Vice President of Exploration at Ecopetrol, Colombia National Oil Company, where he oversees the company’s global exploration effort and strategy. A geoscientist with 32 years’ experience, he has strong background in opportunity evaluation and prospect maturation.
Jorge started his career at Shell Colombia, where he evaluated basins and prospects both onshore and offshore and in areas with complex geology in thrust belts. He later joined Shell International Exploration and Production in The Netherlands, where he was involved in prospect, field and regional evaluations around the globe, applying new technologies and methodologies in play, basin and prospect evaluations. He also served as Principal Exploration Geoscientist at Shell US Onshore, where he led tight gas and unconventional exploration projects in the United States. Jorge returned to Bogota in 2010, where he assumed the position of Venture Manager for Shell Colombia and oversaw the company’s exploration activities in country. In 2015, he joined Ecopetrol as Caribbean Offshore Exploration Manager, and he led offshore exploration activities and strategy. He was appointed Ecopetrol’s Vice President of Exploration in May 2018. Jorge holds a BSc in Geology and a MSc in Geophysics from la Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
Julie Mayo
Energy Transactions Partner and Head of US Oil and Gas Norton Rose Fulbright
Julie Mayo is an energy transactions partner in Norton Rose Fulbright's Houston office and leader of the Firm’s US oil and gas practice. Her practice focuses on oil, natural gas and electric power projects, particularly natural gas and LNG. Julie represents clients on all aspects of project development and mergers and acquisitions and has been involved in major oil and gas, LNG, and electric power projects around the world. Her project development experience encompasses all aspects of the project: from construction to commercial contracts and consortium structuring to transportation. She has been recognized by a number of publications, including Acritas, Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and Legal 500. In 2019, Julie was named “Best in energy, natural resources and mining” by Euromoney at the LMG Americas Women in Business awards and also received the inaugural Power Play Vanguard Award for her leadership in creating a supportive environment for men and women in the LNG industry.
Liliana Diaz
Managing Director at FTI Consulting
Liliana is an energy industry, economic, financial, policy, and regulatory expert consultant specialized in LNG, natural gas, oil and electric generation. She has expertise in market and commercial analysis of fossil fuel and renewable energy in emerging markets. She has worked in energy related ventures globally, including strategic and dispute work in North America, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and has participated in case studies involving Brazil and China.
Her expertise includes market, commercial, strategic and dispute advisory in the energy industry, emerging market economics, Latin America (economics, political risk and energy markets), public policy and market access and business development.
Liliana has a BA in Finance and International Relations from the Universidad Externado de Colombia, and a MA in Energy and a PhD in International Economics, Energy and Emerging Markets from John Hopkins University.
Previous positions include Adjunct Professor at John Hopkins University, Associate Director of Berkeley Research Group and Managing Consultant at Navigant Consulting.
Emily Smith-Llinas
Latin America and Caribbean Region Manager AAPG
Emily is a journalist and international relations specialist with experience in strategic planning, communications and government and community relations.
Emily started her career as Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness Planner and Director for Montgomery County, Texas, where she helped the county prepare for and respond to natural and man-made disasters and public health emergencies. She worked with government officials to lead the public health response to Hurricane Ike and the H1N1 Pandemic and coordinated multiple county-wide mass vaccination efforts. She formed part of several task forces helping the Greater Houston-Galveston Region improve disease detection, laboratory testing, medical surge capacity, continuity of operations and overall health and medical emergency preparedness and response. She wrote the No-Notice Mass Casualty Incident Response Plan for the 13-county Houston-Galveston Region in 2012 and a comprehensive Pandemic Influenza response plan for Harris County in 2013.
Emily relocated to Bogota, Colombia in 2012 and joined AAPG for the following year. As Latin America and Caribbean Region Manager, she oversees educational programs, technical workshops, courses and conferences in the 13 region countries where AAPG has a presence. She works closely with government officials, and national and independent energy companies to coordinate participation in and support of AAPG events. Since the onset of COVID-19, Emily has worked to develop digital strategies and online events for AAPG, both in the region and globally. In addition to her role as Region Manager, Emily serves as correspondent for the AAPG Explorer, the Association’s monthly magazine reaching 42,000 subscribers in 129 countries.
