The objective of the field trip is to study the Cenozoic sedimentary succession in the northern Sinú-San Jacinto fold belt, integrating new geological and geophysical data obtained mainly by Hocol and the ANH, including detailed studies and sampling of stratigraphic sections, stratigraphic and exploratory wells which have been recently characterized in terms of sedimentary environments and facies, biostratigraphy and petrography. The field trip will also include an integration of surface geology with subsurface data from wells and seismic, discussing the implications of the current geological knowledge of the area for petroleum systems and plays.

This field trip will review key exposures of the Jurassic, Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene extensional, contractional and transtensional basins that have growth in the Southern Margin of the Caribbean as a consequence of Caribbean plate formation and subsequent orthogonal to oblique convergence, and with variation from normal to shallow subduction.
