Volunteers from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Student Chapters and AAPG Young Professionals (YP) Mexico Chapter represented AAPG last week at the Mexican Petroleum Congress, one of the region’s most important industry events.

The Congress, held in Acapulco from 26-29 September, convened more than 6000 attendees from throughout the world.

The Mexican Association of Petroleum Geologists led the organization for the event, whose committee includes representatives from the country’s engineering, geophysical and geological societies.

Chapter joined Latin America and Caribbean Region Manager Emily Smith Llinás worked in the AAPG stand in the exhibition, which featured participation from companies who have entered Mexico following the country’s Energy Reform.

We promoted upcoming AAPG events, including the Geosciences Technology Workshop in Mexico City in March 2019 and the International Conference & Exhibition in Buenos Aires in August 2019, and talked individuals about membership.

The AAPG stand on the Mexican Petroleum Congress 2018 was a perfect meeting place, and we delivered presentations there about AAPG benefits to students representing universities from Villahermosa, Tabasco; Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche; Cerro Azul, Veracruz; Minatitlán, Veracruz and Mérida, Yucatán.

We enjoyed the opportunity to share information with them and to encourage them to become leaders in their schools and communities. We hope soon to have student chapters in these cities that are an important part of Mexico’s energy sector.

Participating in the most important oil congress in our country with the group of young enthusiastic students and young professionals in Mexico was a rewarding experience for all of us.

We had the opportunity to interact with people who showed great interest in joining the association, and it was a space for us to motivate them by sharing our experiences and the benefits we have gained by belonging to this great family.

The commitment and hard work demonstrated at this event makes us certain that activity of young people affiliated with the AAPG in Mexico will continue to gain strength in the coming months.
