The Lusitanian Basin, central Portugal, is a world-class basin for advanced training activities, especially in the area of hydrocarbon exploration models. This paper discusses the reasons for this popularity including excellent stratigraphic and paleontological records and outcrops.

High-resolution outcrop analog studies provide ideal opportunities to test and develop approaches for reservoir-scale facies modeling. Detailed studies carried out in the outcropping area of collisional margins can be used as analogs of subsurface reservoirs with similar geologic settings.

The Nordkapp Basin is a northeast-trending upper Paleozoic rift basin located in the western Barents Sea. The presence of salt structures makes this basin of interest for hydrocarbon exploration. Nevertheless, no commercial discoveries have been made so far, and the basin remains poorly understood in terms of distribution of reservoirs and source rocks within its salt minibasins.

Heavy oil and bitumens have been exploited in Italy during the past, in particular over the Maiella Mountain’s northwest flank (Central Italy), where relatively undeformed hydrocarbon-bearing ramp carbonate reservoirs of the Bolognano Formation crops out.
