Europe Region Conference 2016 - Petroleum Systems of Alpine - Mediterranean Fold Belts and Basins

Occured on 19-20 May 2016
  |
Bucharest, Romania

AAPG Europe Regional Conference 19th - 20th May, 2016.

A first for AAPG Europe, the event will take place in the wonderful city of Bucharest. Romania is not only the largest producer of oil and gas in Central and Eastern Europe, but also a country where hydrocarbon exploration has a very long history going back to the late 1800s.

Recent years have seen a significant rise in E&P activities in the broader region, including the Black Sea. This is partly due to the new technologies applied and partly to the simple fact that the well-established petroleum exploration plays in the area became overmature and cannot meet anymore the reserve replacement needs. Therefore previously unexplored deepwater basin segments and underexplored internal parts of fold belts are opening up with ongoing seismic and drilling activities.

ExxonMobil has been exploring in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea since 2008, with our partner, OMV Petrom. After acquisition of a 3D seismic survey in 2009, we drilled the Domino-1 gas discovery in 2012. This was the first deepwater discovery anywhere in the Black Sea. This discovery was followed by acquisiiton of a second 3D survey, the largest that had ever been acquired in the Black Sea at that time. The results of the first well and both 3D surveys were then used to plan an extensive drilling program to appraise the Domino discovery and conduct further exploration in the block.

The interplay of local and global controls on accommodation and sediment supply generates basin-specific sequence stratigraphic frameworks that record cyclicity at multiple scales. A scale-independent approach to methodology and nomenclature is key to the standard application of sequence stratigraphy. There are parameters that vary with the case study, including the types of data available, the resolution of the data available, and the local conditions of accommodation and sediment supply. A standard methodology and nomenclature must remain independent of these variables, and rely on core principles that underlie the application of all alternative models.

Upcoming Europe Events

Workshop
Salzburg, Austria
Wednesday, 7 October Thursday, 8 October 2020, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Join us in Salzburg, the “castle of salt” and cradle of Mozart and Doppler, for a meeting aimed at bringing together different perspectives in the science of evaporite basins: from their formation to their deformation, from description and characterization to modelling. Exploratory success in evaporite-rich basins worldwide has depended on the role of evaporites as a deformable substrate, as a seal, or even as a good thermal conductor. The aim of this workshop is to improve our understanding and predictive ability by addressing evaporite systems in an integrated manner, all the way from precipitation to structuration, and exploring the multiple properties of evaporite sequences. The pre- and post-meeting field trips will also explore the salt mining heritage of the region, first exploited by the Celts 3500 years ago, and the salt-related structures of the Northern Calcareous Alps.

Energy Transition Forum
Edinburgh, England
Tuesday, 15 October Wednesday, 16 October 2019, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

The “AAPG Energy Transition Forum – A New Era for Geoscience” in Amsterdam, September 2018, brought together expert speakers and distinguished participants to discuss the Future of Energy, Sustainability, Digitalisation, and Skills and New Ways of Working. Sessions provided thought-provoking presentations and interactive breakout sessions utilising a variety of facilitation styles to maximise engagement. For 2019, the event built on the discussions that took place in 2018, but being reframed with a greater focus on the individual in a New Era for the Geoscientist the dilemmas that keep him or her up at night, and the skills that might help unlock future opportunities.
