The modern standard tools to detect the presence and to characterise fracture networks in boreholes drilled in the 70s and 80s were not available. Therefore, the characterisation of fractured reservoirs was very complex and at the same time very limited leading sometimes to a poor understanding of the reservoir underestimating the potentials.

Nowadays, the appraisal or re-development of old discoveries made in fractured tight reservoirs implies to deal with the lack of information regarding the fracture network characteristics and to handle alternative approaches. The challenges related to the characterization and modelling of the fractured tight carbonate reservoir of an old oil field from the Southern Apennines hydrocarbon province is presented.

Sign up now and join Paolo Pace, Structural Geologist Specialist & Petroleum Geoscientist at GEPlan Consulting at the AAPG Let’s Connect Series.
