High CO2 as well as high contaminant fields are prevalent challenges facing the industry in the Asia Pacific. The genesis of some are fairly well known but prediction has been difficult and the impact that it has on field development are tremendous. Innovative technology, highly efficient field appraisal and development are keys to unlocking these. Cluster development is some of the things that will help. On the other hand, development of these resources will be competing with new (alternative) energies. What role will the geoscientists and engineers play in this global transition? How will the regulatory framework help with these? What are the best practices, learnings that are abound?

Learning from best practices (innovative technology, cluster development etc.) and risk-based planning are some of the things we can do to help commercialized these fields and bring them online. On the other hand, development of these resources will be competing with new (alternative) energies. Even as the whole industry re-orient itself to play an ever more active role in combating climate change, carbon capture and storage will be playing a pivotal role starting from exploration, appraisal stage. How will all these fits into the energy transition? What role will the geoscientists and engineers play in these changing times? Government and regulators will need to be part of the conversation as we need a holistic solution from the technical space to the regulatory space. Active conversation will be needed in the region that involves public-private participation on how best to prepare and tackle this issue.


High CO₂, High Contaminant Challenging Fields and Alternative Energy - Impact and Monetization - Call for Abstracts Ends on 10 January, 2020

You are invited to submit abstracts for 'High CO2, High Contaminant Challenging Fields and Alternative Energy - Impact and Monetization'.

A 2-day workshop focused on best practices, risk-based planning and the role geoscientists and engineers will play in these changing times. Workshop will be held October 6-7, 2020 in Ipoh, (Perak), Malaysia.

  • Session 1 – CO2 origin, generation and prediction in exploration phase
  • Session 2 – CO2 and marginal fields - opportunities and challenges (appraisal phase)
  • Session 3 – CO2 and marginal fields - opportunities and challenges (development phase)
  • Session 4 – Unlocking CO2 and marginal fields – key enablers, best practice and challenges
  • Session 5 – CO2 field development – technology vs risk-based planning
  • Session 6 – CO2 fields and energy transition – where does it fit?
  • Session 7 – Roles of geoscientists and engineers in this changing energy future – opportunities, challenges and how to prepare for it
  • Session 8 – Regulatory framework – challenges and path to support CO2 fields monetization
