University of Malaya AAPG SC organized the first ever field trip, entitled ‘Uncover the Beauty of Miri’ on 17 - 19 November 2017. Ten Undergrads took part, two of whom were on the AAPG Student Chapter committee - Shakirah Hazlan as the Project Director & Nor Fatihah Salim as the Vice Director. The participants were selected based on their outstanding academic performance by our instructor, Dr. Meor Hakif Amir Hassan.

On 13 November 2017, Department Geology of the University of Malaya had welcomed a visit of 80 Form 1 students and teachers from SMK Cyberjaya who were keen to catch a glimpse of the magnificent world of geology. This event is in collaboration with the lecturers of the Geology Department. Various exciting workshops were coordinated by University of Malaya AAPG SC to expose the students on the basic knowledge of geology such as the 3 main types of rocks, minerals, fossils, coals, LiDAR, and others.

The AAPG Universitas Gadjah Mada Student Chapter has once again presented the International Energy Summit (IES), an annual event which was inspired by the chapter's concern about future energy needs. IES was developed by sharing knowledge, the state of research and experience about petroleum energy issues. The concept of this year's event was a one-day course as well as discussion sessions, which pondered on the Oil Price Process and Regulation Difference: Decision in the Middle of Crisis as the main theme.

A fruitful workshop was conducted by the professionals from ConocoPhillips for the students of Geology Department of University of Malaya on 14 October 2017. The students' perspective on the oil and energy industry was well freshened throughout the 7 hour -workshop, which focused on basin modeling, hydrocarbon exploration as well as career development in the industry

Following the very successful Bandung Technical Symposium (13-14 September 2017), several of our AAPG Region members were able to pay visits to the Institute of Technology in Bandung. AAPG Region Vice President Mark Tingay and Region Delegate John Kaldi were there teaching. Bob Shoup, Region Delegate and past-chair of the AAPG House of Delegates, visited the Student Chapter to give the talk '10 Habits of Highly Successful Oil Finders'. The talk was attended by 30 students.

I recently returned from an “International External Examiner” trip to the Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Perak, Malaysia. While there, I gave a Visiting Geoscientist presentation titled ”Geological Applications of Capillary Pressure: Learning to Think Like Hydrocarbon”.
